  • Saw this in Reddit.
Ad for a Rolex GMT for $240, guessing it was mid 50s, adjusted for inflation etc. that makes the cost around $2300 in today's buttons.
    What's the RRP these days?

  • That was my guess, but seems counter-intuitive to me.

Perhaps two wrongs do make a right?

  • A dealer will often recut / refinish the case with a grinding wheel or dremel to bring the case back to a finish similar to its factory original. This removes quite a lot of metal and can only be done so many times before you’ve no case left. Collectors hate it but inexperienced buyers love the idea of a vintage watch that “looks like it is new”. Unsuspecting buyers often think they’re buying a mint (barely worn) watch but actually it’s a refurbished one.

So basically this sale is aimed at dealers, not collectors.

  • Understood, thanks!

  • I know bugger all about watches, but that’s rather nice, and it seems like a good price to me. Is it?

  • I'll take two, thanks...

  • $8,950 roughly.

  • Great first mechanical watch, good price.

  • Passed my BHI diploma after two years of night school and a hell of a lot of work at home in my spare time.

  • Congrats Roddy! Get yerself a beer!

  • That is huge! Congrats!

  • Amazing! Perhaps motivation was lacking for the quartz module? ;)

  • congrats!

  • Big congratulations Roddy, that's a seriously impressive achievement. What are your plans next?

Also, buy yourself one of these to celebrate

  • Impressive, career change ahead. Well done.

  • Very cool.
    Congratulations!

  • Congratulations. Is it now that the fun begins?

Big pat on the back for you ol chap.

  • Cheers. Pay day soon, think I might treat myself.

  • Thanks all for the kind messages. I'll just carry on as normal which is one day a week at the watch school doing servicing, and adding to my collection which is a bit out of control. I think it would be a cool thing to do as a job when retired, but that's 30+ years away.

  • ooh cool! It was a Sinn 140a that I was after. I found one, then talked to a few people that had owned them. Turns out there were a few design flaws which I didn't fancy taking on, so I've bumped it off the wish list.

Very interesting movement in the one you posted though, a close relation to the Omega 1040 in my omega 176.007 I guess, with the centre minute chrono hand. Thanks again, I'm tempted ;)

Edit: the Lemania 5012 is a variant of the 5100. Family tree looks like this if you're interested.

  • I took a half link out of my tailnaster bracelet as it was slightly too loose, put it back in as then it was slightly too tight. Am I screwed, or is there a way of Goldilocks-ing this situation?

  • Get bigger/thinner wrists?

  • No micro-adjustment in the clasp?

  • Don’t think so?
