  • Yeah, exactly. I've always thought of it as of the opposite of what a coil split does for a humbucking pickup (i.e. disables a coil and makes it effectively into a single coil) - it's probably a bit more technical than that, but that's what it sounds like.

  • Ugh, I also need to reboot. Had quite a good writing/producing thing going with a mate who has now gone into a depression-fuelled VR/gaming hibernation, so the music has fizzled out.
I’m meeting quite a few musical people but need to get motivated and organise something. I never really realised before how much momentum and habit play a part in creativity.

  • Yeah man it's like getting back into the exercise habit after a long period of schlubbing it. I'm both musically and physically flabby at the moment. Feels like a mountain to climb on both fronts. Weight loss thread>>>>>>>

  • been doing some "object writing" exercises from this dude's books. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Writing-Better-Lyrics-Pat-Pattison-ebook/dp/B008Y0XH1C
Quite like setting myself challenges and limitations when writing to see what happens.

  • Has anyone on here got any old cassette 4 track gear they want to shift? I've been having fin with a borrowed one and digging out my old tapes. I need something with vari-speed tho to be able to listen to the the stuff I recorded at double speed. Would love to get hold of a Tascam 246 at some point

  • fucking hell, I'me massively sleep deprived and have had three very strong beers. Just caught myself emailing a gumtree seller asking £450 for a tascam 246... GO HOME FATBERG, YOU'RE DRONK

  • I totally get this... Got lots of stuff to work on but I haven't really been motivated to do anything about it, mostly because I know how much work it's gonna be when I get to the live setting... Ideally I need at least three more of me to get what I want... Hmmm...

I've been running the music programme at work for a week which has been fun, maybe that'll translate to me doing something at home as well...

  • Hope so dude. There's lot to be said for having a really simple set-up (4 track and cheap mic) ready to go at a moment's notice. Perhaps I should start using garageband on my phone. Although to be honest most of my problem at the moment is finishing lyrics so not sure that would help...

  • This new Ep/single has just come out from myself! If you're into garage on the dark and moody side you might like it

  • My problem is starting lyrics, I'm so slack it's unbelievable... I watched a documentary on Sarah Blasko last night, showed her as artist in residence writing a bunch of songs in a theatre... It was really interesting to watch her songwriting process, I need to work harder... I think I've got some really nice things in progress but I'm very lazy about finishing and finessing stuff, maybe that's just my mile wide punk rock streak...

I've recently tilted from all out noise guitar with minimalist, sub-Suicide rhythm sections to languorous, romantic pop a la Dennis Wilson/Chris Bell...

Me too - when I start to finesse/finish stuff it tends to kill the original takes.
I over add /tweak so end up with multiple versions or one muddy mess. I suppose its a 'living' organic thing and can't be tied down.
As for lyrics - maybe its age but I don't feel comfortable writing / expressing the things that I did when younger - feels a bit ridiculous tbh.

don't want to end up like this ... :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dT0ZPZjevVw

  • I’ve never been comfortable with lyrics (singing or writing) but they’re what I need to finish things off now!

  • Do what I did - nick all yer lyrics off Rudyard Kipling's verse. Brilliant.

That was worth a full page in Vice. Apparently.

  • Holy shit that’s horrible. Feel like i’ve Seen that referenced in relation to songwriting recently too...

  • I remember when it first came out and thought shit .
You can't sit down and write a classic - a 'classic' may happen in retrospect.

  • As for lyrics - maybe its age but I don't feel comfortable writing / expressing the things that I did when younger - feels a bit ridiculous tbh.

I think when you're younger you tend to wear your heart on your sleeve. I think your feelings change a little bit as you get older, but it's more that you want more distance from them. I'm quite a melancholy person, and when I was young and beautiful it was quite easy to sing about melancholy in the first person. Girls would think you were deep and dudes would think you were brave. But being a 40 year old singing about how sad you are, yeesh. So I've found myself singing stories more and more - the subject is always melancholy, but the story gives you arms length from it. Its less confessional. It doesn't put your feelings up front and centre, it puts the listener's interpretation front and centre. And I think that's appropriate, since as we get older and older, we acknowledge the fact that other people exist more and more.

  • Anyone here who doesn't use Ableton anymore and would be interested in selling me their licence?

Want to do things properly but can't justify £somanyhundreds for just messing around initially... the basic version is just so limited.

  • New project on the go, totally dissonant fuzz guitar feedback, screamo vocals, electronic rhythm tracks, just me and a singer... I'm writing loads of guitar pop stuff, as lovely as it is it's not really where I wanna go!! Anarchy is the only remedy...

Only question is do I use up my REALLY good band name for this? Heart and head are both saying yes...

  • Go on then - what is the REALLY good band name ?

  • Yes this and also you can get worked up over social injustices/politics etc but 'singing ' about it again feels awkward these days -" anger is an energy " " war is stupid and stupid is stupid " ...

  • Not telling...

  • I'm actually recycling an early-70s NYC glam band's name... Impossible to find anything out about them other than the occasional reference back in the 70s/80s... They have a famous (if you're a 70s NYC music dork) ex-band member...

  • goddammit - I feel I should know this - gis us another clue ?

  • You won't get it, trust me...

  • Amen!

Had a patch wired in for ages begging too be completed but had zero enthusiasm. Made a patch note which, is a painfully slow process (cables + knob position settings). Unplugged the lot to take a portable case on holiday, failed at taking it. And the patch didnt save properly. I have no idea how it was patched.
Part of the charm of analogue? <<<<<<<
