  • Saw a great house today that we're keen to offer on asap.

Only minor thing is that it's not on mains sewage. Apparently the septic tank drains away naturally after a period of time in this system rather than having to be emptied.

Anyone got any experience of this?

  • Very common in the US but they are NOT maintenance free. You will need to ensure your loo roll is septic tank safe, amongst other things. Should be loads of stuff on Google from the US. Ask about the last time the tank was pumped and make sure you know how/when it was built. Could get expensive quick if it's wrong.

  • No bleach down the toilet, as this will kill your beneficial septic tank-dwelling bacteria that consume your waste.

  • My parents' septic tank was built in 1984 and handled a family of 5 (including two 'farmer stock' rugby playing teenagers) and to my knowledge has never been touched. We used to chuck stones down the vent pipe for a lark. My dad did not appreciate that.
