right in front of my eyes
What happened?

I went into Booths Corner (corner Stoke Newington high street - northwold road) to get a coffee and left the bike leaning against the glass door, as I always do, because I am just on the other side. (The shop is tiny, constant view of the bike).
A tall skinny guy with brown long wavy hair just got on it and cycled off. It happened so fast, i opened the door instantly and if my arm was 20cm longer I would have been able to grab him. I screamed and ran after him, but arm was too short and he obviously faster on my bike than me running.
I could only watch him cycling off towards Clapton, report everything to the police and be really upset.

Thanks for the report. Sorry that this went wrong this time. Unfortunately, it's usually a better idea to lock a bike even under circumstances like this, but you don't need me to tell you that. Hope you're successful in recovering it--I'd suspect that your description of the thief would be of more value to the police than the description of your bike.

This is why you gotta ride fixed. Thief will just crash immediately.
Seriously though that sucks, hope you get it back.

I've had my handlebars along with stem and Shimano Sora shifters stolen from the bike racks outside The Castle Climbing Centre in Stoke Newington tonight. The thief snipped all of the cables and unscrewed the stem bolt. When I reported it to the staff at reception, they said I was the second person today.
Now, on Sunday last week, while unlocking my bike at the exact same spot, I saw a couple who'd both had their handlebars stolen. So that's four identical thefts that I'm aware of in the last ten days from the very same spot, and I only know about the couple because I happened to be there at the same time.
When I asked the manager at The Castle how many times this has happened in the last couple of weeks she refused to say, but it looks like someone is systematically targeting these bike racks. According to the manager, they have CCTV of the thefts but the police don't even ask for it and close each case without investigating (nonetheless I've still reported it online).
What to do?

I've also seen this to two bikes around Hackney recently, so maybe their local,

Sorry to hear about your bike!
Sting operation is the only way they'll catch thieves like this, sadly police don't follow up on things unless they are handed it on a plate. You could leave some Dura Ace shifters out, when the thief turns up a group of LFGSS readers can hammer frozen sausages into the criminal.

Ah man! We've all done it, though, thought it's safe if outside and we can see it. A good reminder that there are opportunists out there.
