Slide hammer / dent puller

  • I recently bought a bike off here that had an incredibly stuck seatpost. After trying a few of the usual tactics, I came across a RJ the bike guy video in which he got a post free by deploying a slide hammer.

Ever the enthusiast for new techniques, I bought one of those and had another go, along with some ammonia and a massive monkey wrench. The post came out, but I’m not sure which was the successful variable here. Bottom line is that I think I own all the bikes I will need for the foreseeable, so I am hoping I don’t need this any more. Most of the parts have not been used at all, and those that have were used just for tackling this seatpost, so it is pretty much mint.
I paid £36, so offering here for £20.

  • I know this is a serious dredge, but by any chance do you still have this and want to shift it?

  • Sorry man, it did go in the end.
Can't believe it's two years since I was sorting out that wretched bike.

  • Worth a shot! Not to worry, thanks for getting back to me. I had just seen the same video and got excited. I can see there are a few of the same hammer on ebay so I'll just stump up the extra tenner.

  • In retrospect, I think it was the chemicals that were the successful factor in getting the seatpost out, so the post in the video may not have been as fused as the one I had to tackle. Hope it does the job, but if not, ammonia could work, and as a last resort (and depending on what the frame and post are made of) caustic soda is the nuclear, and effective, solution...

  • I would quite like to retain use of the seatpost as it's a bit of a weird size. Annoyingly it's only a couple of cm off the ideal height for me. If there's no luck with the slide hammer, I'm ready to get destructive, plus it's always nice to own unusual toys, erm- tools.
