Which Groupset?

Thanks. There's a lot to get your head (and hands) around now some groupsets have four different lever types.

I would like to replace my Praxis Zayante crankset with something else. So, what's the hivemind opinion about a crankset that

• is super compact (48/32 or less - probably would like to try 46/30)
  
• uses HollowTech II (or maybe square taper)
  
• plays well with 11 speeds di2
  
  

I've seen the sugino OX901D, it looks nice but sure is pricey. There's also the FSA Omega Adventure, which is cheaper but super heavy. HubJub have the Middleburn Touring Cranks (46/30) at £360 (ouch)

Another thing I have in mind is reusing a 6800 crankset I have with a 46t big ring and a 11-34 cassette.

What else?

'Old' FC-6603 triple chainset, run the inner (74mm) and middle (130mm) with a double shifter. Profit.

Or, old FC-6603 chainset, run as a triple, enjoy massive gear range and constant FD fettling.

If its the green bike and you dont want the 'hacky' look of 6603 then Sugino.

The FSA Omega is the exception to that, but has weird BCDs (120/90 mm). Weight is comparable to the 6603 so not too bad

I have 6603 sub-compact with SPA 42/30 chainrings on my genesis, its great! Ugly though.

I have one set up as a triple on my Space Horse, it's great there too. Not too ugly compared with 6703/X800 stuff - just remove the logos/lacquer and polish it.

Yes you can, think it comes like that on a couple of the specialized adventure/gravel bikes. I really like the Praxis chain sets, they play well with all the 11 speed groupsets.

Indeed you can; that is about the only thing I like about that chainset (okay, the only other thing - it's black).

In my experience the bottom bracket wears out and develop play quickly, needs a proprietary tool, the whole chainset/bb creaks (I've tried putting grease in all the relevant places, and then replacing the bb - still creaks) and the downshift on di2 is, well, shifty (I have some chain-suck every now and then)

It does work (I've done 10,000 km on mine) but as I would like to get lower gears anyway I thought it would be nice to try something else.

@amey @hamrack thanks for the inputs. 6603 would be nice if it wasn't for the chain guard. I assume it works well with 11 sp ? WI could be nice and I could do 1x in the future if I wanted.

Sugino looks a bit beefy

oh weird - i've found praxis BBs to be super reliable. Have used the m30 on one bike and conversion BB an another bike and found them to be super reliable and quiet. The propietary tool is annoying tbf.

You don't need to have a chainguard, that's just a ground down outer chainring. @amey does that coz a) why not b) avoids needing new chainring bolts c) looks better with something in the outer position. Not sure which.

Anyway, it thought 6603 was on the Genesis. I'm not against the chain guard, just wanted to point out it wasn't compulsory and give a few other reasons.

40/28T old Shimano XT FC-M785 doubles make for a great gravel chainset (if you plan on running an MTB FD - no idea if a road FD will work from a teeth/chainline perspective).

Well I'm not sure what that bike deserves, but a WI VBC crankset with 46/30 rings is like £375 from bike24. I'm starting to like my repurposed 6800 crankset solution...
