dog owners help me out, had a heated discussion with a work mate (says he is ex dog trainer) about the etiquette when you see a dog, I always ask the owner if it's ok to say hello pet the dog as you don't know if the dog wants contact or the owner, he was the oposiste saying he knows best he knows dogs blah blah blah but as a trainer I thought he should be even more respectful.
I don't own dogs never have is there an etiquette for saying hello to dogs ?
Nah, always ask. (Unless the dog has already approached you etc). Some dogs aren't sociable, don't like kids, don't like other dogs, are defensive on a lead etc etc. I'd always ask.
I had a really lovely recently rescued staff/boxer cross come up to me in the park this morning. He was really friendly with me but the owner explained that he is very snappy with men while on the lead. Has been known to draw blood etc.
