Why? It's just done for convenience - the lower level cassettes are just stacked up sprockets with plastic spacers. If it's on an alloy carrier then yes, it's a totally different ballgame but I don't believe the HG-500 is... (crosses fingers, hopes he's right)

That's the easy bit. You then have to rivet the 30 back on and rebate the spider to bring the stack down to the desired width.
