"Members of the public could be stopped, searched and detained within a mile-wide strip of the border under new legislation planned by the British government.

The controversial powers are contained in the Counter-Terrorism and Border Security Bill which is currently working its way through Westminster.

If the bill becomes law any member of the public could be stopped within a mile of the border to establish if they are entering or leaving the north.

The new proposals have already passed committee stage at Westminster and some observers believe could be law by Christmas - just months before Brexit is due to kick in."

    A-Ma-Zing. Morons.

  • Just on simple logistics. Who do the government think will actually do the checking. Customs have been long split up and cut to the quick, I’m not aware of any frontier control staff or infrastructure in the north and any operational activity still, afaik, by Hmrc / ukba still requires a lot of armed back up. Can’t see PSNI keen to get involved in a politically shitty, operationally highly dangerous task which will probably be easily circumvented by those who used to do it back in the day.
After all that I wonder who would get stopped most, if have a fiver on those who identify as Irish / nationalist. Plus any smugglers will undoubtedly come from the ex paramilitary/ organised crime milieu which won’t be a good thing (as per the red diesel frauds) Another step closer to a nation once again.
