You never learned the rule? It’s one of the first things a good store teaches its staff. The scruffier the man, the bigger the wad. Of course, the phrasing is always more polite and less euphemism, but many a store staff have been caught out.
For example, all the buyers at Paris Photo wear comfortable clothing, only the poor or aspirational wear smart.
