  • I hope it does... I'll be doing a bit of digging when I'm in town in a couple of weeks, prices for old vinyl are crazy in Oz... Bog standard OG mainstream LPs going for $50... It's nuts...

  • It was actually not the value I was referring to.
I just need to sort out some crap that I don’t even know why we have.

  • Ha! Last night I found 60 45's not in the discogs collection yet, some of them I don't think I could give away. They're all valuable to me though, the properly valuable ones more so obvs.

I'd only ever describe a record as valuable if it has some monetary value, bloody linguistics. Mind you I've got a pile of 300+ records that I would sell in a heartbeat as I don't think I need to listen to them again.

  • Best to save your time digging in central, I'd say come to mine and have a go but based on your posted history of purchases I don't think it would be worth your while either!

There's a couple of places I go in Brixton that are enjoyable, nice owners, but the vinyl is rarely VG at best, prices are fine but the originals are mostly mashed.

Rat Records in Camberwell have some decent staff but want Discogs£+ on everything. Handy if you want to avoid postage though. You'd be better off picking up new UK presses no?

  • I'll bet he has it, too.

  • Just read that a UK OG issue of the first Stooges LP in VG condition sold for over £900 three years ago... Mine's NM/VG++ and signed by the Asheton brothers... Crikey!!

But I could never sell it... :(

  • Oh, stop bragging.

...or maybe keep bragging for a bit more. What are your other top treasures? Do you have a cheaper edition for listening and keep the signed one in the vault?

  • Not a brag!! I just found out the RSD reissue that came out was a double and had some great things on it, while I was searching for that this random fact popped up... It rather took me aback!

I've got loads of signed Stooges stuff, I DJ'd when the Asheton brothers came over with Mike Watt and J Mascis... Raw Power, Funhouse, Sonic's Rendezvous 45... Lots of signed MC5 vinyl too, but Wayne Kramer and his wife ripped me off in recent years so that stuff doesn't feel so special anymore... I've got a lot of nice signed things from back when I was DJing at gigs in the 2000s.. OG Like Flies on Sherbert on Peabody signed by Alex Chilton, Big Star Third signed by Jody Stephens (Alex would only sign one thing!)... Lots of stuff...

  • Looked at the prices of records in charity shops recently?

Wanted to buy a few records to test a few decks, that I really should sell, ended up going to Flashback records and got some mint limited editions records for 50p each.

  • Have they all started putting their prices up? The Oxfam books near me used to get some really good stuff in. I picked up a couple of Pete Rock instrumentals still sealed last year for £2 each.

Flashback I find a bit hit and miss although I've only been to the Crouch End one recently. Seeing the queues outside there and Audiogold on RSD pissed me off a bit. Knowing most of the records bought were going straight on Ebay.

  • All the various charity shops are £3 an album minimum and the discs are scratched.

  • Are white label/promo versions fun to collect?
An album, I'm after is for sale as a promo and I'm debating if it's interesting enough to miss the cover, artwork etc... For how I use my music, I guess not, actually.

  • I think they're fun to have if it's cheap and you've already got the stock issue... I've got a few but think I'd prefer stock for most of them... Depends if you're a crazy completist or not...

Stock promo copies are ace, especially if they're mono!!!

Is it in demand? Many £€¥$?

My promo copy of Big Star's Radio City has a company gatefold jacket, press release, etc, no promo pics unfortunately but it's still fucking amazing... One of my fave things... And promo stickers are super cool!! IMVHO...

  • Thanks
It doesn't seem very sought after or expensive. I don't have the stock copy yet, so I think I will prioritise that first.

  • I’ve always thought it was the 1st pressing side of it that was more important, i.e, fresh plates. In terms of dance music it’s usually the case that anything with a picture cover is a commercial press cashing in on the high sales of a record so value is lower as there’s a lot more copies around.

  • Even 'first pressings' can get complicated... I've got the first two pressings of the first MC5 LP but I know there was even a third pressing that year even tho' the record sold very little and went straight to the cutout bins... The record business is weird...

Same with Raw Power by The Stooges, very few copies of the first UK pressing exist so most think the second pressing is the first pressing... Again, that sold about twenty copies when it came out... I don't know about dance music... A lot of my old soul 45s come in varying label designs, some even have a different artist name on them even tho' they're the same record... Excuse my rambling, pseudoephedrine... 👅💊

  • Looks like I don't have to worry about my AMP super fund being fucked, I'll just sell my records when I head back.

  • It's completely mental. I don't think anyone could make sense of vinyl pressings. So many moving parts in the process from start to finish. I like the buzz from getting a good pressing in good shape of a great album, you have to kiss a lot of frogs before one turns into a prince though.

  • Finally got around to sorting out lots of my vinyl recently. Sold a fair few but I came across a little stash that belonged to my ex brother-in-law.
Apart from a few reggae albums there wasn’t a lot that I’d heard of but just been listening to The Saints Eternally Yours album and found it not half bad.
So now I’m on a late 70’s Aus/NZ punk exploration.

  • Picked up a weird unauthorized Russian pressing of Swordfishtrombones at the weekend. Worth the £15 for the artwork alone. It's near mint and sounds fantastic tho. Woop!

  • Just came across this in my collection. Have no idea why it's worth approx 10x the value of my UK release. I assume you'd never actually get that price for it.

  • I'd be interested, but there ain't nothing but sweat inside my hand.

  • For what it’s worth, pre-ordering the new Beak LP from the invada site nets you a free t shirt

  • Massive record fair in Victoria (London) Saturday 8th September (this weekend). Check VIP record fairs for details. Apologies to any junkies attempting withdrawal.
