  • Still not quite there yet with this De Rosa. I think the wheels and frame are not playing nice together and it's making the handling whack.

  • I usually like the all black vibe, but in this instance I reckon silver seatpost, stem and calipers may work better.

Still looks epic as is though. That's an amazing frame.

  • Which silver calipers would you suggest?

  • Looks like you will either have to go with some vintage Dura-Ace or Modern 105 Calipers. As far as I know these are the only two silver Shimano options at the moment.
    Here some BR-7800 for example.

  • Killer advice.

    Thx!

  • Do the pull ratios work though? This is one of those things that people whinge about as Shimano changed (brake) pull ratio at some stage, so you can't always use old brakes with new levers, resulting in crap braking with certain combos. I would check before you buy anything

  • Great bike! I think black suits it very well. Would probably look good in all silver as well. ;)

  • That’s a good point to consider. Unfortunately I do not have much info on that.

  • Really nice. Too bad these wheels won’t last.

    What tubing is it?

  • the different pull ratio thing is a have - Shimano just love to sell people unneeded components...
Think about the huge number of companies that have proprietary brakes (Giant have their 'Aero' bikes released with TRP brakes, Bontrager bits on Treks, various weenie component makers etc.) which are used with shimano brake levers from whichever generation, AND Campagnolo / SRAM etc. too.
Just stick the best quality silver brakes on that you can find, with the best brake pads that you can find. It'll work wonderfully!

  • This is properly functional! Is this your touring bike now? Any more on this, CP thread or PedalRoom? Could maybe use some nicer mudguards though, other than that very good.

  • This is lovely, personally i wouldn't change anything just for looks whilst the handling's out. If you want silver calipers DA 7900's might be good modern option. The only thing i'd change for looks would be the black headset to a silver/ti/pewter option (you'd probably want this if putting a silver stem on). But then again if i'd just forked out for a CK i wouldn't want to change it!

  • I don't want silver calipers or a silver headset. Black is king.

I'm interested why it would look better with a silver/pewter headset? Wouldn't it be weird if all the other bits are black?

  • The HT lugs are chromed, so silver would work nicely (example).
Any joy on the wheels / handling front?

  • big guy u are! nice bike!

  • FTFY> The HT lugs are chromed, so chromed would work nicely

For me it's more a question of the difference between:

    • Neo retro
    • VMB
    • Full black parts build
  • OK, OK! At least no one said the classic and irritating "but it's an Italian bike it deserves Campagnolo" yet.

  • but it's an Italian bike it deserves Campagnolo

  • Sorry, misunderstood previous posts, thought you were considering silver calipers, i think the black groupset looks great.

I have a silver CK on my Argos and i can switch between black or silver finishing kit nicely with that. As others have said i think it might match the lugs nicely but also the downtube bosses and cages. I also think it could maximise the impact of the wheels and groupset by keeping the frame looking than much more classic.

Note the use of might and could, it's a killer build that would be hard to improve on

  • Is it though? It's made of Reynolds.

  • It would look weird. Look at my De Rosa from the previous page. It’s either all black or all silver imho (regarding headsets).

I bought a 2nd headset in black even though the 600 was fine only because it bothered me so much.

  • But your bike looked great with a silver headset!
