The US forums are pretty good- I like Grass Roots Motorsports, you can pretty much guarantee that whatever the car is you have someone on there will know a lot about it.

I’m not familiar with car pulleys but in my industry, V pulleys have V belts (no teeth).
-
• #43704
Yeah seen those and im certainly no expert but i believe the belt with the wider less point tooth are stock for this car.
I got a suggestion that the main pulley may have not be put together perfectly straight if it had been off causing the belt to wear abnormally. And thats a possiblity since the timing belt have been replaced as well and beleieve you have to take it all off to get to that.

Toothed bit on the inside is fine.
Is the belt branded? Is there anything on the outer belts identifying them?
Do the belts sides have the same profile, as you get different profiles examples here http://www.sedanengineeringentp.com/industrial-belts.html

beautiful job. chapeau dude

Think the pully has a woodruff key. Pulley looks balanced to the crank.
Unless they damaged the pulley or key.
-
• #43708
Yes i think its centered okay on the axle itself but perhaps theres a spacer or something that is on there that should be on the other side or something similar causing the pulley to be straight but not parallell perhaps?
I just gave away the original belts to the mechanic and he is ordering 3 new belts so i cant check the profile right now.
I think they will fix it properly now (tomorrow and not ask for payment) and then everything will be good. 1 time is no time right.. I will then forget it ever happen and live happily ever after? :)

has anyone else seen these guys

The premiss is that regular cyclists have better road sense and consideration and as such are less likely to be involved in crashes. The guy behind it is donating all profits to http://www.starfishmalawi.com

Look for any VAG cars from 2005 onwards (all 5 X 112) - pov spec golf/A3/A4 etc they'll probably be pretty skinny. What's the centre bore? If you're 66.6 then look at the bigger marques - A5/Q5 etc
Edit - your issue will probably be brake clearance

^This is to balance up the car/tyre situation.
C55 has 367 bhp and 245 section rear tyres, or .67mm per horsepower.
The 996 has 300 bhp and 285 section rear tyres, or .95mm per horsepower.
Now I'm not going to modify the C55, so I need to bring the power in the other car up a little.
Our goal is .71 bhp/mm, if we could equal the C55 then I'd be over the moon - I suspect a lot will depend on whether we can turn it all the way to 9,500 rpm.
More than once, I would add.

It’d be a lot easier/cheaper to just put narrower wheels on it if that’s the only metric...

That model looks great

where is the rev limiter in a stock 996 engine? 9500 sounds very high, i like .)

Saturday was a hard day. It was scorching, the sun and heat were unbearable, we had no shade, but we got the engine and gearbox out. We had to finish there for the day because we were knackered. Only broke the speedo cable and cut a gear shift boot unnecessarily, that was frustrating because this one was basically new, but minor issues. Uncovered some bodges, spilt gearbox oil everywhere, but definitely a good learning experience. Hoping for cooler temps this Saturday if anyone wants to come an help dress the new engine and get it in the car.

Are you going to strip the blown engine down to find out what made it go pop?
-
• #43719
Yeah it's going into the new garage to be slowly stripped down and rebuilt. Current basic idea is switch to a MK2 head so I can take advantage of the solid lifters, give it a massive skim to get much higher compression, some head work, and then bottom end supporting mods to get it to withstand 8k rev limit, maybe 8.5k max. I've got TODA 10mm lift with 284/267 duration cams to go in, but I'll need a new inlet manifold to go with the MK2 head.
So all of that with my GSXR throttle bodies, 4-2-1 exhaust manifold, custom exhaust, and standalone ECU means I can hopefully reach 100bhp/litre, then I'll be happy.

In the last 2 weeks I've spent about £300 on gaskets, seals, slave cylinder, new braided clutch line, gearbox and diff oil, things like that, plus the £100 cost of the engine means this is not quite the quick, cheap, and dirty engine swap I was planning, but still pretty cost effective.
^^^ Above will probably set me back about 2k on top of what I've already spent/got, which is peanuts I think compared to what @Dammit might be spending.

Just plunged into project Binky. Mental. 7 episodes down so far, won't get much sleep ;)
@Sam_Doman looks mint! Def do a detailed write up with pics when you get the chance please.

• #43723
What is it with binky? I watched a few about a year ago and wasn't feeling it, maybe I watched a really dull one. Latest one they install a windscreen wiper?

• #43724
Idk, just like it. Partly as they don't seem like mechanics really, more part engineer & part Richard Attenborough.

Not cars, and a lot more garage mechanic than Bad Obsession, but you may also like this:

Hey neil
Im only a member of one here in sweden and since i allrdy posted there on how nice the shop was fixing my car (they likely also read there) i feel it would not be appropriate to comment about this particular incident right now on that forum. I guess i could fine another one as well, may come in handy.
