The Presidential Flight of 3 Ospreys and two helicopters popped into RAF Northolt.
I'll try to upload a picture.
They took off just as I passed by on the way to West's Beers. -

From takeoff, how much ground would a good sized passenger plane cover before it reached cruising height?

On this profile, somewhere in the region of 160 nautical miles

Big jets like 777s and A330s for China, Japan, Singapore, etc, are regularly over my house at 3o,000ft +, usually about half an hour after lifting off from Heathrow. I'm on the Norfolk Suffolk border, more or less 100 miles from the airport in a straight line.

I like the way that planefinder gives you additional info on airport runway support vehicles.
I've no idea why I like this. -

Apparently my great-grandfather worked at Felixstowe making flying boats for the Navy, which prompted me to take a look at the contraptions that they built then - it also appears that none of them survive to this day.
Does anyone know anything about those planes?
They've just been over here, near Thame. On their way to Blenheim?
