  • Anyone ridden LEL and PBP?

I rode LEL last year and loved it. Challenging but looking back a great ride. Just wanted to know what the terrain was like in PBP? quite french country lanes for 1,200km?

  • Anyone ridden LEL and PBP?

    LEL'09 and PBP'11. Both on 67" fixed.

You'll like PBP. It's generally undulating with no stupidly steep climbs. Longest climb is the Roc'h Trevezel between Sizun and Carhaix.

Can't remember much traffic at all, it's amazing.

  • sweet. Yeh really looking forward now - might attempt fixed.

  • Ah great to hear. I'm going to give it a go too.

  • Mid peak audax this weds for me, 140km (inc ride to/from the start) with 2200m climb, and I have had no riding in my legs for over a week. Feeling pretty apprehensive. Brought a compact chainset back from my parents though, that should help.

  • I rode Tan Hill 200 on Sunday 63" fixed. I purposely avoided any long rides for a couple of weeks, and no hilly rides for a few before (I still had to commute) Rested legs are strong legs.

You'll be fine. Remember - he is able who thinks he is able.

  • That's quite a ride! That long hill out of Forest of Bowland is one of my favourites, I've only done it once on a hot bank holiday earlier in the year but it was glorious.

Thanks for the encouraging words, I'll report back here in the few days afterwards.

  • Got myself geared up and accepted that i'm going to dns. Too much on at uni. Taking consolation in the fact I've entered 2 others later in the month and am cycling to bristol next week. Never mind.

  • Rode the inaugural London Orbital 300 yesterday and it didn't disappoint. Lovely leafy lanes once past Slough pretty much all the way to Gravesend. Waiting for the ferry and drinking beer was no problem. 30km or so north of Tilbury was not the best, but the control at Leaden Roding more than made up for it. They really made an effort.
I was very pleased with my hour long tactical stop over at a pub near Roydon to let the rain pass. Glimpses of London way in the distance to the left and you knew it was the home straight. More deserted lanes before the final (punishing!) hills back into the Chilterns. Thought the ride was fixed friendly up to that point.
Excellent route and organisation. Hope it happens again.

  • Agree with all this. That Leaden Roding control really was something else. Within 15 minutes of leaving it started chucking down so we rode the last 90km soaked but it was okay really. Should have popped the mudguards on.

  • Any one doing tour of the hills on Sunday? Only a 100, but chock full of climbs. Perfect distance away to ECE up to 200 too and add a couple of extra lumps to hopefully boost the AAA and winch me over 100

Rode last year, suffered a huge cramp goimg up Barhill and had to sit down for 20mins. None of that this year I hope!

  • Rode BGB last year. Was good fun, however the middle 300km are a bit boring. Tentative for this year. Going to see how I feel after my Galashiels 600 this weekend.

Recommend Eddie Stobart truck stop (rooms avaialble) in Carlisle as a rest stop. You're likely to hit it in the middle of the night both up and down.

  • Windsor chester Windsor has just opened up for next year.

  • Would like to do a decent DIY/perm over the bank holiday. Just having a look at LWL which looks good. Can anyone recommend something else that starts in or near London? Ideally between 300-400k?

  • So looking at jumping in at the deep end for BGB, will I need guards?
I have a decent set of lights and spares and power bank. Anything else I might have overlooked for bike setup?

  • Mudguards weren’t required last year.

Just bring what you’d bring for a hundred miler tool pump tubes etc. Maybe fresh socks / bibs if you’re feeling fancy. . Should be able to kip in the Abington services.

  • Also going to be there on the Galashiels ride. May be in forum jersey at some point.

  • Look up the Kingston wheelers audax.
    They start from raynes park.
I have done 200,300,400 and they are good rides.
The 400 is a good starter 400. Most of the climbing is in the first 200km and then pretty flat till the end. Last hill is at 330km.

  • They look really good and fairly easy for me to get to, thank you

  • Thanks. Still have to work out family logistics etc and maybe some lower gearing.

  • No real steep climbs. The Shap is long but not too tough. What gearing you have?

  • 52/36 -11/28. So not terrible but I do prefer to spin a gear.
I need to check time cut offs (if there are any) as schedule might be a bit tricky given travel etc.

  • I finished in 37 hours last year and finished around noon I think. Due to the night start you should be back around morning / early afternoon Sunday.

  • I guess in my head I was thinking a probably unusual pattern of, 100km ish sleep, 300km sleep 200km. Top of Shap seems about 100km in mind. Need to do a bit more research.
