Moving out of London

Off to Worthing tomorrow to look at houses, our dream of moving to the coast is inching slowly to becoming a reality.

Seen an amazing 3 bed house with a summer house and office, for about £100000 cheaper than the 1 bed flat is going for in the next road to ours.

Any Worthing tips?

Not seen many about to be fair, although I don't think we'd be heading into Aldershot at all. It's more run down than my home town and I didn't think that was possible: the whole high st is boarded up and basically nothing there. The only good thing is the Lidl and Wilko (that I have seen so far).

This makes me emotional about my humble routes

But are the employment rumors true? Will I have no option other than join the military or become a 30 yr old trade apprentice?

What line of work are you in? I'm a freelance writer so I do a fair bit for my old employer (London based) and others. Only one northern company, and that's incidental because all my leads come from the net.

There's not too many squaddies in Aldershot anymore is that a decreased number thing? The parachute regiment is still based there? And the field hospital?

HR - so office based. I'm sure there are jobs outside of EC1, and I've been told I'm probably worse of renting / buying in London on a 'higher' income than elsewhere in the country. It's the lack of choice which is daunting

I guess every company (of a certain size) needs HR people! I see a lot of jobs up in Manchester in my industry (marketing/copywriting) but my wife works in retail and there are FAR more companies in London than up here.

@Chalfie I should add that we've only been in town once so my comment on not seeing many squaddies is probably cos it was mid week and like 1pm! Plus I wouldn't know what to look for!

It's the lack of choice which is daunting

Where I am there is literally nothing to the point that I don't take my wallet out anywhere unless specifically going somewhere. I'm not going to stumble on any pubs/places to waste my cash. It feels weird but at the same time good!

Getting beaten up by squaddies is the first thing that comes to mind when someone mentions Aldershot.

Or Andover. Or Colchester. Or Catterick. Or any other UK town that has a large garrison nearby.

For me catterick means my first experience of snow. And getting the zip on my parka stuck.

Do you know Worthing at all? I lived there a few years back out of necessity as I was a trainee and was working in Brighton at the time and Worthing was all I could afford - it's probably the most boring place I've ever lived in. It's utterly utterly unremarkable.

Catterick is the best comedy of the 00s. Maybe ever? Vic and Bob's best work.

The plainest possible seaside town. Used to go there to shop when I was growing up living in Ashington (also fucking dull) because there was a TK Maxx and that has remained about the only point of merit ever since as far as I can see.

Shoreham-by-Sea is the only worthwhile town that side of Brighton in my experience

I went to Worthing last year with my family last year. I liked it.
BECAUSE IT WASNT BRIGHTON.

Went to a talk by someone who grew up in Worthing who said it used to be famous for tomato greenhouses, and that part of its "plainness" (lack of identity) is because its former proud industry hasn't left anything recognisable behind. They also said it's the least affordable place to live in the UK - I think comparing local income and opportunities with the cost of property bumped up by being "cheaper than Brighton".

Just out of curiosity - which village?
I'm not an expert in either but from superficial visits it seems Norwich is "nice" - little shops, art, students, whereas lots of Ipswich is quite run down. However, you don't have to go far from Ipswich before coming across lots of nice small towns / villages. I know quite a few people who have moved to the area either to retire early or bring up kids.
