In my local Morrisons there's a section called "pie accompaniments" with vinegar, peas etc.

Every day I thank myself for moving back up north.

This makes me emotional about my humble routes

But are the employment rumors true? Will I have no option other than join the military or become a 30 yr old trade apprentice?

What line of work are you in? I'm a freelance writer so I do a fair bit for my old employer (London based) and others. Only one northern company, and that's incidental because all my leads come from the net.
