    A standard "GATSO" costs between £20-40k, you reckon they don't cover their costs?

    I am not arguing that cameras are a good thing, I am suggesting that from what I've seen, Police officers have been replaced by cameras, which do fuck all to affect change.

  • I had a little bit to do with these cameras in last job. They’re not he silver bullet that people think they are in terms of enforcement. And just because a camera costs £X to buy doesn’t mean that’s the total cost. They’re not totally automated - every time a speeding camera catches someone there’s a real copper doing paperwork behind the scenes. And with police budgets being slashed that often means no action is taken. I’d love it if the cameras could be made self-sufficient, or even profit-making to fund new ones, but they’re not currently. Lots of stuff is going on to make them more efficient.

    I only had a tiny bit to do with them, but that was my understanding at the time.
