  • Agree, not comparable but still an alternative way of doing things.

Forgot that I'd need a DAC as well so the sums are not as favourable as I first thought.

  • This deffo isn't an £8k project. Started out as £300 Raurk tiny Bluetooth speakers and a source!

LB1s would be a thing. I spent some time looking for a SH pair of them a few years back, last time I was on a big speaker kick. Didn't find anything at suitable price / condition / location.

    Might have another look.

  • The LB1's are a great choice. Only problem, they show up ordinary amps. I ran them with a Cambridge amp for years and they were fine but the bass really improved with some mono amps. I'm running a pair of Dynaudio AIR 20's and the LB1's are not being used for a while but I keep switching between the 2 and the LB1's are no slouch.

For a simple wireless/bluetooth setup that can run stereo pairs the Libratone work pretty well. We have 5 of them for a whole house solution and they're great to take into the garden on battery power. It's not hifi but it's easy to live with.

  • Someone suggested in this thread some very good cheap speakers on ebay. Jog anyone's memory.

  • ELTAX MONITOR III Speakers!!!

I got mine second hand for £20 I think. Wicked first good pair. (and still on fleebay)

Then upgraded to Dali Zensor 3s... I love these speakers... These are lush. I bought them as they have a larger woofer.

  • Is it just me that reads KEFs as Kweef?

  • They have a DAC in them; good shout. I'd not seen those before.

  • Ooh... There are two pairs of LB1s on eBay right now.

£600 and a jaunt down to the west country secures.

  • You wouldn't regret it. Paired with a decent amp they are very nice. New tweeters are easy enough to get but the bass drivers are rocking horse shit so make sure you check them.

  • My girlfriend has decided that she wants us to get a record player. I wouldn't say she's an audiophile and I suspect it's partly for aesthetic reasons but if I'm going to listen to it I don't want anything shit.

I know very little about this but from what I gather I'd need a phono pre-amp as well as a turntable. Any recommendations for turntable and pre-amp around £200? Cheers

  • Ask @Dazaa if he has anything in this thread: https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/250030/?offset=975#comment14350668

Failing that, a second hand Rega P1 and Rega Fono Mini are a good combo if you're after something 'newer'.

  • You might get a Rega for that money. What amp are you using?

  • Cheers. It's going into a Denon AV amp powering some wharfedale floorstanders. Setup is more for films than music (although it's decent for the non-audiophile).

Dazaa was going to be my next call but just trying to get an idea of what's out there, what I need, what makes to look for, etc

I think bright green is probably out though.

  • Yeah Dazza has a Project atm I think and I have an amp I bought from him for 75 quid that I'd let go for 50 (it was a temporary solution).

  • This the right place for AV talk?
TV sets ups, talk to me... I want to get something decent so I can actually hear what people are saying in films. Currently have some Harmon Karden speakers (the classic 3 piece ones) but they are too many wires for my liking. My TV is going ot be sitting on its own legs (it has legs) and I plan on running a single cable to.... ???

AV amps look big and complicated, I'm leaning towards a Sonos beam.

    Anyone any suggestions/thoughts?

  • I'd just go for the soundbar to be honest. The reviews have been outstanding from everyone...

I have a Cambridge audio amp/streamer with some modest Mission LX-2 speakers. Great for films, gaming and especially music, but it is more expensive, less tidy and more hassle than the soundbar.

  • ive had mixed results though with soundbar + clear voices - variety of Sony and Yamaha ones even with their special voice boost settings they are not that good

  • Aye, I'm defo swinging towards it for its simplicity. I have also been considering wall or ceiling mounted speakers like these http://uk.kef.com/ci200-2cr but I'm not even sure what the best way to connect things are, I currently just plug my speakers into the headphone jack of my TV.

  • Well, those KEF's still require amplification, so you'd probably do TV Optical > Amp optical and then speaker wire to the speakers. That in itself is a rabbit hole though. Your amp would ideally be away from the TV in a cabinet somewhere, wiring going through walls or in trunking or conduit etc. It's a lot of work...

Your other option, budget dependent, is a pair of active speakers like the KEF LS50 wireless: http://uk.kef.com/powered-speakers/speaker-series/ls50-wireless

Unless you're buying this setup for critical music listening, too, I'd get the Sonos.

  • Should have mentioned... I'm getting the whole place redecorated anyway and building a cupboard to hide wires and gubbins so built in speakers wont really be much hassle...

I've already got a pair of Kefs for music listening so wouldn't want another set of bookshelf speakers in almost the same room.

Also like the idea of having a smart speaker.

    I'm getting the Sonos aren't I?

  • Yes, yes you are.

  • Cheers but probably not something I'm looking at getting right now, need to clear some stuff out before more comes in.
