Soundlink mini is nice, although I'd say a minirig sounds better.

I use a proprietary Yamaha bluetooth dongle thing into my modern Yamaha A-S500 amp and use a QED Puck into some nice old stereo gear upstairs so wasn't overly thrilled when I received a Bose Soundlink Colour portable blutooth speaker as a gift last Christmas. I didn't think I had much need for it.
It turns out to be great though. It's small, tough, looks good and is super handy in the garden, the car, the office and on holiday. Battery lasts ages, charges quickly from blackberry type tether and the sound is genuinely surprisingly good. The bass in particular is very cleverly processed to pop out in quite a pleasing and revealing way. I love it.
It's also the only bluetooth gadget I have that will accept being paired with multiple devices without sh*tting itself. It announces what it's attached to when you turn it on and it's easy to scroll to the one you want.

Just seen this, brought a jbl charge 3 when we went to jamaica at Easter. Loving it!
Gives big enough sound when you're lazing on the beach, also carrying it around the flat to listen to podcasts has been a revelation.
Bluetooth connection is quick and painless, and the fact it's waterproof means showering whilst using is a pleasant surprise (to be clear its usually on the side rather than under the shower head)
Would recommend it to anyone looking for a portable speaker.. -

I got a Xiaomi bluetooth speaker...if you're prepared to wait, you can get them relatively cheap from Aliexpress

I'm looking at a JBL Flip 4, are they any good?
I like the idea of the connect+ nature so any future purchases of compatible units can be linked. -
• #58
Ended up buying a Flip 4, sound is great for the size. Goes pretty loud. Easily fills the kitchen with noise and clear enough in the next room.
Not had a chance to take it outside to see how it fairs outside, but all signs point to a great bit of kit.
Apparently you can link 2 and have left and right channel dealt with individually, it you can link up to 100 of the buggers for massive noise.
Handy if you know 99 other people with 1. -

I've seen a few people with these hexagonal speakers clipped to their messenger bag straps, but the only hexagonal ones I can find on ebay lack the clip to attach them to a strap.
Is there a goto brand for these?
Pic from the hipster thread for reference...yes, I know, the hipster thread...

Not a fan of the whole music while riding thing?
90% of the time I think I'd agree but I've been on a few social rides where someone's had a speaker and its been good.
I'm thinking better weather is coming, nice chill ride somewhere, beers, tunes...

I've got one of these:
http://www.mi.com/en/speaker/
and its incredible.I got the Chinese version as it has MicroSD slot (non-Chinese ones don't - they're all still made in China though obvs). The only issue is to use it you need the voice instructions. They're in Mandarin so I've no idea what I'm doing. Still works great as a bluetooth speaker though (also has a 3.5mm jack input).

Recommendations please!
Looking for a portable speaker. Most important:
- should have great, natural, big sound. By "big" I don't necessarily mean "boomy" / "subwoofery".
- will be used indoors mostly, does not need to be that portable, nor waterproof
- does not need to have a lot of features / wicked smartphone app / link features etc.
- bluetooth will be useful, thugh this will likely just be used with aux-in by cable
I see the UE boom things and a lot of JBL Clip / Flip/ Charge models around town, and I am often impressed (read: annoyed) at how freaking loud they are - though I think they have exactly this sort-of subwoofery / boorish sound that I don't like.
This will be used in a ~30m² room most of the time, and it should provide a good, honest sound - including bass frequencies.
Needs to be "loud enough", but not screaming loud.Have looked at a lot of reviews and so far the "DOCKIN D FINE" seems to be a good choice.
Does anybody use this ?
Does anyone have other recommendations?Thanks!

I have the Logitech UE Boombox for this. It does everything you describe and has been completely reliable in 2 years or so of daily use. Highly recommended.

I’d recommend the jbl charge 3, but you’ve put that in your list of don’t wants. If you have such a specific listening preference your best bet is to go and listen to as many as possible and make a decision from there. Internet recommendations aren’t going to cut it.

Thank you both for your feedback!
Yea @cornelius_blackfoot I'll go check them out in stores if I have the time to do so! -

..bit pricey for what they are, gotta love how they look though!

Don’t know your budget but if you’re after a bit more than a speaker and have the cash I’ve always liked the sound and design of ruark.
They even got a wireless speaker in the works due about now..https://www.ruarkaudio.com/products/mrx-connected-wireless-speaker

Don't need "more than a speaker" right now to be honest.
These ruark things look nice, would prefer Bang & Olufson's style though. In this case it should be under £200 though, and primary concearn is not design or portability or features, but great sound..

We had one of those at a weekly community thing.. yea they look neat, sound was ok, but we had battery issues (would drain complety during a few hours of standby after just being charged to 100%), also connectivity was a bit shaky at times..
