  • Thomas was the strongest, crossed the line before Tom every time except in the TT so I think he'd have won it even if Dumoulin would have had no bad luck or penalties at all.

Fun fact: over the course of the 2018 Giro d'Italia and Tour de France, Dumoulin and Froome are only 13 seconds apart over a distance of six thousand nine hundred and thirty-two kilometers

  • 13 seconds apart. That's 6.932 kilometers

    I'm sure it's not.

  • Looked like he could've won the TT too.

  • Argh. Edited

  • I thought he meant the . rather than the comma.

  • Pretty sure I did...

  • Yeah I think both Nibbles and Porte were sorely missed, would have been interesting to see what they could have done.

  • 13 seconds apart over 6,932km of racing I think is what the statistic is supposed to be.

To work out how far that is, you'd need to work out the average speeds of the Giro and the Tour and then work out how far they'd have travelled in 13 seconds.

  • True, and ever the gentlemen Doumoulin was very gracious in defeat and said as much in paying tribute to Thomas.

But he did that without much team support (Kelderman was sorely missed) and with the Giro in his legs, so an extremely impressive ride.

  • 200 meters at the most.

  • work out how far they'd have travelled in 13 seconds

    Climb, descent, or flat?

  • Argh. Edited again

  • Behind a motorbike or head on in the wind?

    :-P

  • Climb, descent, or flat?

average speeds of the Giro and the Tour

^This kind of takes any of that into account. It would assume the average gradient for the whole parcours

  • Average speed of the Giro 40.181 Average speed of the winner for the tour 40.210 (couldn't find an average speed of all riders)

Website i used goes to one decimal place.

    40.2mph 145m
    40.1mph 144m

  • Fair to say there’s not much between them then ;)

  • Combined Distance - 6,932
Combined Time of winner - 172:19':52"
Combined Average speed - 40.22 kmh

Average distance covered in 13 seconds - 145m

    (beaten by @Hamham)

  • Extra marks for showing your workings....

  • Have you taken into account time bonuses?

  • Looks like Froome is +2 seconds in time bonuses, so 11s excluding time bonuses.
    So 123 metres or so.

(Froome 2 first place Giro, 1 3rd place Tour, total 24s)

(Dumoulin 2nd and 3rd in Giro, 2 second place at the tour, total 22s)

Didn’t see whether either of them got intermediate time bonuses, I don’t think they did?

  • Dumoulin TDF 20 sec time penalty too

  • Good afternoon,
I assume that's based on classified times?
If my assumption is correct, you'll need to go back and note actual times to recalculate.
    Kind Regards
    etc etc

  • Being ignored as he would have lost more had he not drafted. Don’t think anyone considers the time penalty unfair.

  • we would be a crap party if we all went.
