I cycled the Gorge d'Ardeche (D290) as part of a mini tour a few years ago, can confirm that it's absolutely brilliant. If you do it from east to west, the last few kilometres are basically a ramp straight off the mountain down to the water. Hardly any traffic too.

And if you want to stay at a really special place, try this Hugenot hideout from the early 1700s, owned by a very nice Dutch couple. We were there for a week in May and it was terrific
