You don't get many chances as a manager, even as a famous ex-player. You need to choose your first club really carefully. How could Henry relate to the football of League 1 or 2 having only ever played top tier football? I think that would be suicide. Villa are a big club who have suffered from poor mgmt from top to bottom but if Henry can strike it right then it's a massive opportunity

Villa were a big club but are now consigned to the footnotes of history. Henry can cut his teeth then do top tier on the continent winning domestic cups and maybe the Europa league before taking over at a good premier league club. Promotion, no, not this year, not with Villa, the fallout from being promoted and having a disaster of an Autumn in the prem would ruin him.
Welcome to the championship.

Successful first time (player)-managers in no particular order:
- Johan Cruijff
- Kenny Dalgleish
- Pep Guardiola
- Zinedine Zidane
- Glenn Hoddle
- Gianluca Vialli
- Ruud Gullit
- Franz Beckenbauer
- Carlo Ancelotti
- Didier Dechamps
There’s plenty more and there are also plenty of failures (Giggs/Ince) but I doubt there’s a stat out there that tells you that you need to start in the lower leagues to become a successful cup winning manager.
- Johan Cruijff

Malcolm will be the signing of the summer

Do you see Harvey Barnes getting any game time?
-
• #145712
Well we don't really have a first team at the moment so, if he's got his own boots, he'll be in the starting 11...

That bad?

It feels a bit mad, if you take into account what they paid out last season, even taking into account transfer fees getting ever more inflated.
Sure he's only 21, and he's had one half of a decent season in the league, but it feels like a reach for him, and a bit of the manager only looking for players they've previously worked with.
Hoping that Silva and the new Director of Football Marcel Brands know what they are doing.. -

also just seen this, which I find hilarious! How much did West Ham get paid for that? Is that fueling their current spending spree?

That looks amazing.

Real statement-of-intent signing from Chelsea:

I heard that rumour a few days ago and couldn't believe my ears...

Homegrown quota player. It’s not like he’ll ever play for us. Bench player for cup games or when our first choice GK is injured.

hart ?
why I said I kinda agree.
maybe I should have kept the philosophy out of it, but if you can make your style of play work, or adapt it to work in lower league conditions, then you have the confidence to know with better/more technical players, you can make it work higher up. Whether that's the way it works in reality is another thing.
But like I said originally if he does get the job I hope he does well. Would be good to see another black manager in the football league/premier league
