  • I've managed to get a set of hubs and rims (slx and r460db), is there any reason I shouldn't use D Light spokes? I had them on my last wheels that got nicked with my bike.
Is there something else I could consider?

    Obviously, price/mass/black if possible.

  • ACI Alpinas (Cyclebasket)? Negligible weight penalty (1.7mm centre section rather than 1.65mm) and 45p each in black. Prob quite a bit cheaper even after £6 postage or whatever it is, for a wheelset's worth.

  • ordering some bits for a wheelset - do I want straight pull or nah?

    Hope pro4 hubs
    LB carbon 45mm rims

    24f 28r

probably go for cx rays but open to suggestions...

  • Go J-bend.

CX-ray straight pull are seriously expensive. Have you considered 28f 28r?

  • I'm open to alternatives - ideally something aerodynamic as it seems silly to buy deep wheels and not use appropriate spokes.

  • Yeah. You’re right 24 on a 45mmcarbon is probably fine. I was thinking alu disc brake wheels.

  • People might buy them for the freehub, plastic caps and end caps etc. if nothing else as those wheels are pretty common. And there might be people out there with lightly used but expensive 18h rims (Zipp etc.?), spokes to spare and broken flanges who want a cheap hub as a stop gap. 20h rims are much more plentiful too so the rear might be a goer. Maybe I can build an aero-but-heavy wheelset like for TT sort of stuff. Think I'll hold onto them and do some scouring on the internet for now but maybe I'm just in denial

(they were free so no great loss if I have to donate them somewhere)

  • People might buy them

They might, but you'll be sitting on them for a while before you find that one person who can be bothered to resuscitate his entry level factory wheels with a guts transplant, and when you do you'll have met a fellow cheapskate who won't want to part with more than £10 including postage 😀

  • Lol, probably right.

Anyway, again, I'm not a cheapskate, just poor! I need to let out my tinkering urges somehow and that means ultra-cheap parts for the time being

Poor enough that £10 inc. postage is worth having

  • trying to figure out what spoke length i need for my wheels

the rims have ERD of 550mm

The hubs (Hope RS4) list their info here but that doesn't seem to correspond with the values that various spoke length calculators want me to input.

Any idea what i'm doing wrong?

  • Using mfr/spoke calc hub & rim dimensions rather than measuring them yourself.
Only one way to be sure.

  • Don't have the hubs in hand yet sadly. Guess it might come down to that.

  • What rear hubs fulfill the following requirements?

    • Black, 32h, MTB rear disc
    • QR 135, but can be converted to thru axle later
    • High engagement - 36T or more
    • Less than £250

At the moment I have: DT Swiss 350 with upgraded ratchet, or Hope Pro 4. Leaning away from Hope because of the issue with the freehub body getting worn away. What others?

  • Hope Pro4 with steel freehub?

  • Hope Pro 4 with a nice alloy carrier style cassette?

  • ah, sweet. didn't know they did that. £60 extra tho.
looking at the White Industries XMR too now.

  • Bitex centrelock. Built two wheelsets with them now. 54 point engagement, low weight, 140 quid for the pair. Come in a bunch of colours

  • Looking for a sensible 32h QR disc brake hub to lace to a XR31T for my disc trucker for town duties. Probably will be running 9sp

  • When I ordered hope centrelock disc road hub the change to steel freehub was free.

  • Although I'm planning a similar wheelset if I ever have money and am also thinking something bitex or DT 350 for axle changeability and weight.

  • oh really? who was that from?

  • tweeks

    ChrisH@tweekscycles.com

  • When measuring straight pull spokes is the head included in the overall length. Thanks
