Team Sky management has nothing to lose by waiting.
Thomas will probably collapse in the last week (used too much energy going for stages), or fall off, or have a mechanical, or get run over by a motorbike.
If he does then Sky get the result they want without pissing him off.
If he doesn't, then Froome can go on a crazy mission to try and take time. Thomas can be ordered not too chase and he'll have a difficult choice to make - a high energy and therefore high risk chase against orders, or hope it comes back together naturally.
And by leaving the status quo for as long as possible, then if Froome is the unlucky one for once (pushed off a mountain by a fan?) at least Sky have got a chance with Thomas.
So, as a machiavellian team Sky DS I'd be doing bugger all right now.
