  • Bikepacking at the source of the Wharfe this weekend! Popped in to see The Strid & a dip in the river at Burnsall on our way up. By the time we got to Burnsall I was on my last inner tube due to rotten luck & we had forgotten to bring a patch kit (mistake one) - thankfully a guy in an organised bike touring support van gave us one (cheers Paul from Saddle Skedaddle!). Then after a delicious evening meal in Starbotton, we rolled up to wildcamp in the upper valley at the foot of reverse Fleet Moss where we I got bitten to bits, but thankfully got lent some insect repellent by some Belgian campers (mistake two not bringing some myself).

On the next day I'd planned to discover a new road, which looked gravelly judging by satellite pictures. Was definitely right. Cracking way of descending Fleet Moss with a view of Inglebrough & Pen-y-Ghent towards the Ribblehead Viaduct. Quick light lunch & then over Goat Lane past Pen-y-Ghent back into Wharfedale via Halton Gill, & an easy (ish) roll back to Leeds along the very familiar backroads after nipping in to look at Conistone Dib & a pint in Burnsall.

Great little weekend adventure! Strava for day one & day two.

  • yep. how those tyres are still inflated ill never know. seen every terrain i think im ever lilely to ride on

  • Shakedown ride in Suffolk to test out my cycle touring and camping rig ahead of a late summer longer tour in France. I did a shorter variation of the Lost Lanes Waveney Weekender. Some 65 miles overall on virtually empty roads. Amazing weather. Amazing camp site with really cold showers. Watched the England-Sweden quarter-final in a tiny local pub with very good beer. Blessed by the bike gods (long story) had lovely people give me ice cold water for free on many occasions. Legs shagged. Need to drop some weight off me and the gear. 12/10. Would love to do it again.

  • You took a table and chair with you - top marks!!

  • Rode to Manchester from Leeds for a BBQ/home ice cream with the parents. Managed to plot very hilly routes both out & back again not really on purpose.

Encountered this on the way back on Halifax Lane, so I don't feel that bad about not getting a very good time on the segment, aha. Had to hike a bike around the apex of the corner. The tow truck crew are going to have a fun job getting that out, being jammed in a 25% hairpin.

  • lovely work there dude. I have that tent too and it made me happy to see it up with your bike.

good luck on the longer tour in France later in the summer.

  • Oh dear. Is that one delivering to a rural Safeway's or a lorry delivering groceries to private houses?

    Where was the driver?

  • Not sure, I'd guess the former as the latter as usually smaller. The driver was chatting with the towtruck operators just up the road trying to figure out how to proceed.

  • Thank you J. Expect a full write up of that tour. I am very much looking forward to that week.

  • look forward to reading that Chris. roll safe dude

  • little jaunt west along the south bank of the thames from Reading. Thinking of doing more of this route. something like 30 miles out, camp and then back the next day

  • I need to get on a bike again. Fucking RWGPS taking over my eyeballs.

  • 50 miles around north Essex, was already getting uncomfortably hot at 7:30am. I ran out of water about 10 miles from home and limped it back looking for a tap to refill my bottle unsuccessfully.

Managed to pull off a sick bunnyhop over a big pothole that I saw far too late, I was pretty impressed with myself as I'd normally react too slow and smash the back wheel in. Also got back into town just in time to see off a mate doing a race-for-life and sat in the shade in the park with an iced coffee while she ran around in the heat. Pretty fun day out.

  • Rode over to York to watch Eboralleycat crit with a few friends. A friend won, I wished I'd entered. Took out my frustration in a single-man fixed gear TT back to Leeds, constantly running out of water with one small bottle (so hot, even at night).

@Lukas Track Champion compared to my friend's bike is a funny scene. Unlucky on that crash!

  • Thx for the photos on fb!
Jon's bike has really made me want a Wald basket. Not had a proper look at one in the flesh before, but they're great! Might look into that Wald X Restrap collab.
Bit annoyed about that crash but pleased to get third; just pushed the rear tyre a bit too hard in the middle of the corner. Dan rode a clever race, and made a fine break after the crash; deserved the win and seemed genuinely happy with his prizes.

  • My pleasure! I enjoyed the contrast between Jon's bike & yours in that last photo. I think the rack/basket he has is this one. I think there was a sale on recently, loads of friends got them & seem to like them. It's a bit rattly from riding beside him on the way over to York from Leeds, but generally seemed fine. The only person I know who has been disappointed by it was because he couldn't fit his girlfriend's dog in it.

Yeah it's a shame, that. Could happen to anyone! @Dandy is known as 'Fast Dan' out of the few Dans I know in my circles, aha.

  • Rare club ride. Saturday social. Only 5 of us showed up because there was a big event planned for Sunday.
Great to ride in a small group with everyone pretty much at the same level. Also bonus that it was a mixed group (so no pissing contest), a lot of local knowledge and minimal fucking about. No mechanicals, no Brexits, no srsbsns.
Some libellous gossip and blinding weather.

  • From Reading along the south side of the Thames to Pangbourne. Included ice cream from Tea on The Thames at Mapledurham. Then up to Wilders Folly, before cutting back to the river then home.
