Revell Romany Audax/Tourer

  • 531ST throughout..frame, fork blades, stays etc
Read in a previous add for a very similar bike from 2012 that Mercian, along with Dave Yates and Joe Waugh were contracted to make these for Freewheel. Cut-out lugs and general fine workmanship on frame.

Defects - Although in very good condition for a vintage machine, there is inevitably some paint loss to tubes due to normal wear and tear. Decals are shot and, paint wise, it really could do with a refurb.
    No dents though.

    Fork - 531
    Spacing - 100mm
Features - Cantilever bosses, mudguard eyes, non-recessed brake attachment.
Wheels. Non matched, 36 spoke front and rear..lost the decals.
Rear gears - 5 speed block touring block
Gear levers - Suntour Power ratchet type
    Chainset - Stronglight 52/36
    Front Derailleur - Shimano band-on
    Rear Derailleur - Suntour ARX
    Ali Rack
Mudguards - could do with new ones, but functioning.
    Seatpost - Fluted alloy 27.2mm
Saddle - tatty but useable Turbo
Brakes - Dia Compe Cantis front and rear
    Bar Stem - SR
Handlebars - SR Road Champion/Sakae Custom. Cheap (but doubled up on the) bartape.
Brake levers - Weinmann, gum hoods worn

Ended up tinkering with too many nice old bikes down the years and some have got to go to good homes!
Price - £140 Pick up from North London.
    Also advertised elsewhere.

  • ...forgot to say..23 inch frame

  • I had one of these and it was superb. Far better than anything off-the-peg of the same age.
Workmanship is excellent. Not your average mass-produced touring bike then and still a better bet now than loads of 'Yeah, but what actually IS that tubing?' new bikes at 6x the price.
    Bargain matey, GLWS.

  • The 2012 add was asking 260 ish..but paint/decals are tatty on mine and need the space..bargain anyone?

  • Hi I am interested and in north London. Please could I come and see it next week?

  • Hi user91675
Sure, come and have a look.
I'm off up to Lancs to give my folk's a hand but my partner will be at home in the evenings.
PM me and we can arrange a time...
Alternatively if you can manage to come this weekend I'll still be around.

  • ...early birds/worms proviso being in place user91675..it may go in the meantime.....

  • Hi, is this still available?

  • Hi there Theo..it's still available..got someone viewing it Monday..(and it;s on ebay finishing Sunday with a surprising amount of Lurkers) but did emphasise if someone turns up and wants it beforehand then it goes...If you'd like to look at it and take it for a spin sometime over the weekend?
    I'm in Finsbury Park.

  • For anyone interested. These are cracking 531st tourers. Quality built frames.

  • Try getting a Yates/Mercian/Waugh frame alone for £140.
    A prince in paupers clothes.
    It's a steel steal folks.

  • It's being talked up so much I'm getting tempted to strip it down, respray and rebuild..but I've too many bikes..repeat/stop the rising impulse!

  • ...I'm 53..spent too many years going into other old northern fellows sheds going' that's a nice bike...why don't people want steel..bombproof' and wandering off with yet another classic to tinker with.
Now I've got a basement full (well my 80 year old mum).. I have to divest myself of all but the most interesting..the '50's stuff..and the Roberts..and the one off Jarvis time trial frame that Mr Jarvis confirmed he'd built when I went round to get a dink fixed.
..oh dear, the list is getting bigger again..need to buy a garage with a house.
Meanwhile I ride round on a flat bar 501 beater because of London traffic etc.

  • ...just as an aside.
Cautionary tale, don't try too hard at the lights..light but not so strong!

  • ..thankfully not my event..yet another shed rescue.

  • I am 53 and a north-eastener as sentimental about old steel as you are. 13 of them at the last count! It's probably been built by a northerner so think of the heritage, keep it.

  • My pride and joy was a Peninne..incredible lugwork.dad's mate's winter beater..gave me it for a tenner back in '81. Came flying round a corner on Rosedale chimney bank..thinking I could see the roof of the cars..only to be met coming the other way by a bleeding mini...managed to just miss him, flew by him laughing and saying 'mini?!'...hit the gravel, hit the hedge...I was pinned in the hawthorn my Peninne was some distance away..about an inch or so shorter...pulled out the forks and carried on up to friends in Egton Bridge..had the inevitable ripple in the down tube and was half aware of it so dumped it for a Galaxy when I ended up cycling round Ireland....If only I'd kept it..but at least it wasn;t aluminium.
Been looking for a similar Peninne since..the lug work!
Did I mention the lug work?

  • The lug work on this Romany is nice but not a patch on that Peninne...Romany is now gone..thanks folks.
