This.
Especially the risk of cracking the piston:

I bought a used SRAM Hydro groupset that came without spacers in the brake pads, now they are quite close together .. the rotor goes and wheel rotates but with good amount of rub. Will it self adjust or do I have to take the pads off and push pistons back?

That is literally the last question that was asked in this thread

yes but no answer

get the park tools piston press, do it properly

That tool is such a waste of time. Handle is way too bulky and the angle is so large that the caliper almost aways gets in the way. There are some way better things out there, including most non-metal tyre levers.

This information might be stored somewhere here but looking to replace the pads on an arkose , which has a set of Shimano BR-R517 calipers (I think), think these pads seem right, what would people recommend for a solid budget option? My go to on rim brake is the lifeline pads, is the disc version any cop?

Yup, and that's very cheap and might get myself a handful to stock up!

Do m6000 brakes come in silver? Google only shows black.

TRP Hylex - worth it (about £180) over BB7s?

This is about the best value disc brake multi tool.
Piston press works well, it has a pad spacer and bleed spacer and truing tool.

Christ, yes. Bb7s are shit cable actuated brakes, Hylex are good hydraulic brakes.

soz m8, theyre winging their way to me in Berlin, Zjermany as we speak

the guy I sold the bb7s to which the hylex will replace told me: "best disc brakes are bb7s with organic pads, all the other ones I used gave headaches sooner or later". thanks for the encouragement man!

His experience with bb7s is the complete opposite of mine, they required more attention than a small child. I basically had to adjust them after every ride. Awful, awful brakes.

Ah, thanks for letting me know.

FWIW, I'm reasonably happy with BB7s + organic pads + compressionless outers + SRAM S500 levers too. But I need one more caliper for my commuter and instead of buying a single BB7 for £50 (+ cables, pads, etc.) I could upgrade the brakes on one bike to Hylex and shift a caliper over to the commuter.

Same here. Loved mine, still carry a spare caliper, lever and cable in case the hydro fails.
I think they're even ish - I've looked and it seems ok, wheel is in place and turns (albeit with friction) and resistance seemed to be getting lower.
I've had to take that bike to a bike shop for another bit anyway so have asked them to do a check, rather than re-install, so they can have a look and either confirm I'm not a numpty or fix it so I don't die a death of nobrakes
