Earphones / Headphones: Where to try, what to buy?

  • I have to give points to JBLs line of portable speakers. I'm normally very picky over audio quality and was suitably impressed by the JBLs when I spent a week with one whilst on holiday at a friend's house. Very neutral sounding and not boomy like most consumer speakers. Quite a large room for a portable speaker, mind.

  • Thanks for your feedback!

Yes I know the room is large, but unfortunately tempoary / portable sound system is the only option there (and I need to bring it on a bike, amongst other things : )
Music doesn't need to be deafening loud though, but should sound nice.

  • That Bose Soundlink is very good, and portable enough but no good to use while riding

  • Missus needs new IEMs – what's good for around £30?

  • Have been using some MEE Audio M6s for about a year, and have been really pleased - they sound good, the bendy wire keeps them on, and they come with a million tips. The M6 Pro is more expensive (£26) but comes with replacable cables and inline mic/controls. Don't know if they sound better but I'd be happy dropping a few extra quid for those bits if I bought again.

  • Use this code for 50% off the full price ones: NMcTDsx7

  • Holy shit - use the code on the half price ones too!

  • Out of stock already :-(

  • I got a pair. Wonder if they’ll deliver.

  • Ordered a pair very late last night and got confirmation this morning...money's gone from the card so hoping they arrive this week - couldn't really turn down the opportunity for a pair of them for £120 (after codes and Quidco) having read all the reviews and the only niggle seems to be around their cost!

  • The promotion was a World Cup one (it's still going on). 10% off per goal England scored (capped out at 50%) so the 6-1 gave the 50% discount. Seemed a pretty big promotion so can't see them going back on it. Keep an eye out for future England games (although can't see us scoring that many again) for some form of discount.

I have the Momentum on-ear wireless and they're great headphones (and I got them free as they couldn't repair the 6 year old headphones I sent in for repair so good customer service too).

  • Annoyingly I had a pair of brown in my basket as they were the only ones left, and then my kid started crying and distracted me from finishing the order so I missed out :-(

  • Not the smallest but I love my ILoud portable. Don't be put off by the terrible name. Also their Micro monitors are something else. Every time I sit down and listen to them I'm surprised by how great they are. So clean and surprisingly punchy for such a small package.

  • ILoud portable

    Thanks for the suggestion!
Am reading quite a bit about bad battery capacity and that they are breaking very easily though..

  • Holy shit - use the code on the half price ones too!

Pair arrived. They are good. Very good. Hat tip and thank you!

  • Yep, just got a pair of the in-ears delivered. Maybe not worth full price but very good for half price.

Here's hoping we put 5 past Belgium so I can see what else they have.

  • What's good in £30 earphones at the moment? I see the MEE Audio M6 PRO above, anything else to consider?

  • Recommendations please:
I’m after a good value headphone setup for my tv.
I’d like to be able to run 2 pairs of headphones wirelessly from the telly.
    Cheers

  • Any ideas?

  • I’m not sure this is possible but the Bose QC35 ad has a couple on the bus both watching the same phone using the headphones. I’ve tried this and I can’t get it to work but could just be that I’m not doing it rigjt

  • Think you may need the Bose app to do this.

  • Can't be arsed to search that post but thanks whomever recommended checking out the Sure SE ones for noise isolating earbuds.
Tried the SE215 and have to say isolation is really great.
In fact it's "too great", or, more accurately: I found it very weird in a way, as it's like super tight earplugs - I felt completely disconnected from the outside world, hearing one's own voice was really really strange as you basically only get the vibrations in your own skull.
Didn't like this, and also the fact it's such a fucking hassle to put them on / off (which you have to do when you speak to somebody, as otherwise you hardly hear them).
Sound was ok but treble quite muffled.. I do like a "warm" sound, but this was a bit dull actually.
Also I had the remote version for iPhone, and gotta say for headphones that expensive the remote / mic is quite shit, also renders the whole plan of tightening the cables behind your head useless, it's just an annoying plastic thing dangling against your neck. Weird how they got that so wrong.

Tl;dr - I think they're good if you really want to be "in your own world" and just keep them on for long-ish periods, without the need to take them off.

Tried a few other sound isolating IEM's as well; best value for money and no-nonsense were Sennheiser IE 4.
Still in the end realized that inears won't give me what I want so going to get some HD-25's and be done wth it.

  • I got some too - really impressed. Comply tips are great.

  • Anyone used the B&O over ear things? Are they comfy?

    Intended use is when cycling.
