Because it sounds like he encouraged some MPs who had been marked as part of a pair to vote (because the numbers were expected to be very tight), and thereby broke a long-standing tradition that pairing agreements are respected.

I think what this shows is that May is simply dishonourable--she's trying to cling on to power by any means necessary and doesn't shy away from foul play. See lying to the 'rebels' etc. If she'd played with a straight and not a crooked bat, she'd be long gone.
