  • Yeah you’re right. I’m just sad.

  • It's very saddening to see one of the greatest British cyclists of all time leave the Tour like this.

I really hope I'm wrong, but I also have a feeling that this is the last we'll see of him in the Tour.

  • Maybe it's one last shot with a different team? #itsthehopethatgetsyou

But in all seriousness, who would take a sprinter who can't finish?

  • Perhaps that’s why I’m sad, it’s about more than just his tour. His naysayers were strong - as ever - at the start of this tour and I longed for him to win a stage and show them, now that didn’t happen.

He’s had a horrible year with many nasty crashes, one couldn’t blame him for walking away and being with his growing family.

  • I think not being able to finish is a sign of the crashes he’s had his year, his training has been poor and he’s just not got the stamina needed to rebuff the fatigue.

  • Maybe he should reconsider his discipline. Okay, he may never reach that record number of stage wins, but he will always be loved by a core group of us. How well can Cavendish go in shorter stage races and monuments?

Forget grand tours, has he got the balls to direct his attention to shorter faster stuff?

  • Mikey Snow sounds like he should be in the same gang as Sonny Colbrelli.

  • Still got Sagan, Gaviria, Greipel, Kristoff

  • Groenevegen? Demare? Laporte? The latter two will kill/die for a win in Paris

  • agree completely! but unlikely to happen

  • I totally agree. I was one of those naysayers, based on the evidence of his pretour.
I don't doubt his skill, his bravery, or his knowledge, he just hasn't got the legs this year because of all the spills.

I'm really bothered by this, if this is his last tour, I'll miss all his post race directness.

  • You have to question why Dimension Data brought him and Renshaw to the Tour. It looks like his form isn’t good enough, so bring a rider who is in form and might win a stage.

I’ve said it before, but Dimension Data really need to overhaul their recruitment and coaching strategies, they were bad last year but they’ve been really poor this year and none of their high profile riders - Cavendish, Meintjes, EBH, Cummings - have contributed anything.

  • Carlton Kirby did his best to ruin it

Just dreadful yesterday. So many G's - if nothing else you're a professional commentator so at least vary it up, although he's really NOT your mate. But at one point he also started talking about it 'coming home'. FFS he's Welsh.

    ITV from now on.

  • Maybe I’ve answered my own question- they brought him to the Tour because they had no alternative.

  • DD looked so promising for a bit, didn't they?

  • They ride for a worthy cause and the mission to develop young African talent is fantastic. But that seems to have been lost as they’ve signed aging white European riders who haven’t performed, nor have they seemed to help in the development, from a performance perspective at least, of the young African riders on the team.

  • Me too. Chapeau Mark

  • Unless he shows some real form next season no team will want to risk it. A sad end to something absolutely glorious, 30 stage wins just incredible.

  • Is this going to be one of those posts with a "well that aged well" repost under it?

  • Guy Martin is racing? Is there anything that guy won't try?

  • Good day for watching tv.

  • Meh, he made a fortune racing his bike...

I bet on him to win stages. Bye bye ££ How am I supposed to afford another CeramicSpeed cage for the ultra bike if riders don't perform like they should. Hmmf!
