Miche Primato Crankset help?

Posted on
  • Hey,

I recently got a new Miche Primato Crankset & Miche BB (1.5 months old.) It KEEPS coming loose, creaking and cracking and generally being a bit shit.

I lost my rag with it the other week and have lockit the bb cups in (as they are both loose rather than one being attached to the BB) but it still creaks pretty badly. I don't think it's anything to do with the chainline necessarily and can't figure it out.

It's on an Aluminium Fuji Track frame which I know may mean the quality of thread isn't incredible but riding with the soundtrack of cracks & creaks is becoming slightly unnerving. Anyone got any ideas why it makes such a racket? Do I just need to get a better crankset & BB?

    Cheers for any help, Stanley

First make sure it has nothing to do with your pedals etc

  • I just fitted a set to my Canondale Capo alloy frame.

The usual things apply here. Were they fitted with correct torque settings - 35nm-40nm? Did you grease the BB taper? Case for and against.

Creaks can only come from interface areas like cups, taper or pedal.

    My 2p.

  • Yeah, gave them a right blast. Put 45-50nm through them (could the issue be over tightening?) Hmm.

And thanks for the link Starelite, guess a little bit of tinkering is in order.
Oh, I do love a checklist.

  • Get rid of the BB.

  • ^^^ What Ratch said. Have you greased the tapers of the bottom bracket, where the crank arms attach? I've got one of these cranks, and it too starts to creak, so it pays to keep the bottom bracket greased. I also wound some PTFE tape around it first before greasing it.

  • No experience of the miche bb, but I've been using a Primato chainset for a couple of years without problems. Chainring bolts need greasing every once in a while if you haven't already done that

  • Cheers, bit of tape & some grease seems to have done the job for now!

What bottom bracket do you use Ste_S? Like I said pretty much new to track bikes and I'm still finding my feet in terms of the best reasonably priced square BB's.

The Miche one was cheap as chips but I fear I go what I paid for...

  • From what I know, miche bb's are hit and miss. I've never had any problem with mine in 2 years, just keep it greased.

I bought a Cinelli Vigorelli as a complete bike (as built up by Chicken's) a few years back and it come built up with one of these (Tifosi BB at the bottom of the page)

    http://www.chickencycles.co.uk/index.php?cat=7&sub=107&ord=2

Lot's of people seem to sell them with their own branding (Tifosi, Token, Prorace etc).

Rather worringly Chicken's don't list a 107mm option for it, which I've only just noticed - will have to check mine out. Still, it's been ok for a year of track racing and then a year of commuting...

  • Not sure if this is the right place, but i also have a Miche Primato Crankset and I'm after a smaller chainring for it
Miche smallest is 46t and i'm really after a 44t
does anyone know what else will fit it and is of a decent quality??

    Cheers
    Adam

  • I just ordered a Token ring from wiggle for less than 20 quid. Reportedly quite good, but I wont be able to comment until I have received and ridden mine to pieces.

I bought a 48T Token ring in the middle of last year.

It's fitted currently to my daughters track bike as well as been used on mine and it has lasted quite well; considering buying a 52T!

  • total robo dredge - I've got a Miche Primato Adv crankset on my Gazetta and bang on its year birthday its started to creak all the time - discovered that two chainring bolts were actually sheared off but still in place yesterday, so replaced all five bolts with some stainless ones last night but the creaks are still there - might have to get the BB out and check that - or its the crank arms on the BB spindles - FFS

  • Try greasing the crank arm where the ring sits?

  • Will try cheers. Its weird it's more of a metallic 'ping' noise when pedalling hard. There's some movement in the cranks, so I think it must be emanating from that region

  • creaky 'pings' turned out to be dry seatpost bolts! the noise must have been resonating through the frame, I was convinced it was crank/BB related
