alas 2" gives me only about 2mm of clearance in my stays

I don't know, the 2" mean lower pressure thus likely to have more room.

I have 2.3" on my Arkose, and they rub at 40psi, but once it's at 20psi, it got 2mm clearance.

I speak from experience, I ran 2" for quite a long time at various pressures.
