I could not live without mine now, or on my cargo bike. On the drop bar bike, I detest them!

They are nicer without guards and we've been spoiled by this nice weather, but Brompton + rain + no guards makes me want to give up cycling. Fine if you have alternate transport for the wet but not for me. First day of rain and mine will be back on.

I think they look smarter with them, or maybe im just so used to it, plus, sit slightly better when folded etc

Good advice all. Very rare that I go anywhere with hills, and I'm not going to take it on the train except very rarely - it's literally a spare bike for cycling to work when my main steed is off the road, and something for my missus to borrow if she fancies. I was considering the rack not so much because of the ability to load luggage but because people say it sits better when folded, but that could be nonsense.

its not worth it for that alone, I have 40 bikes sat in "cafe fold" next to me, no wobbly bikes!
S2l sounds ideal though, maybe a 3 speed if you/the gf wants a slightly wider range, but you pay a little more and add 1kg!

I initially put them on because I kept clipping the rollers with my inner heel which was annoying and almost removed my shoe once. The improved ride was an added bonus I found.
If I was only doing a couple of miles I’d probably be happy with flats but it’s 5-6 miles at each end of the day with quite a lot of climbing on the way home.

What is it, and how many teeth? I really need to get one for my Amsterdam two speed but sheer google laziness is stopping me.

I would rather sacrifice the weight for the higher gear of a 3 or 6 speed as I find the 2 a bit spinny. 2 speed definitely the most fun to ride, just as efficient as an SS so really nippy.

I've been glad of the 6 speed having moved from London to Edinburgh and having to cycle to work with tired legs from a morning cycle.

See, I only hit my feet when I use clipless! You're right, makes sense for a longer commute.

One for the forum, i have an M type i want to convert to S type. I am correct in thinking i need;
Stem
Bars
CablesBars seem straight forward, though Brompton or third party?
Stem, this is brompton only? Hoping to track down a second hand one..
Cables, recommendations sought -

Yup, m type stem and bars - I have some brand new or used bars to sell, then just a recable!
How old is your bike? You could alternatively fit a lower riser bar such as the Joseph kuosac one, 2017+ bikes will not need cable modifications as the bars are wider so the levers sit wider in hand...

• #4473
its a 2004 swapping for the lower riser seems a good budget option

You will need to custom cut the cables!
