I think for the majority, you're right to question why would they ever be concerned about having their place searched.
For me, not only due to that event, but also because I have an extensive history of being stop and searched on foot and in my car under Section 44, I do worry about what I'm carrying on my person.
In mine and @cake circumstance, we had a (used) pop-up target practice board in the hallway with bullet holes in it which prompted a washing machine repair man to call the police and tell them we had guns in the house.
