The current standard is SMETS1 which currently have issues with switching (i.e. it will generally become dumb if you move to another supplier) although that may change in the future.
New version is SMETS2 which is meant to be rolled out in the next few years and should work with all providers.
Personally I'd probably wait but if you're planning to be with your supplier a while then it probably doesn't matter either way.
I keep getting spammed by my energy provider to say they are in the area and want to install smart meters for my gas and electricity. Should I say yes? Getting annoying now.
