Installing clipless is the single thing that makes the biggest difference imo. So hard to ride one on flats.

Really? I find it so refreshing to ride on flats. Have put Speedplay on but I can't say it makes a huge difference for me.

I often nab the gfs m6, its such a different bike to my s2,riding in flats is not a regular option anymore, only on the kona ute with the little human, and i despise it!

Indeed - game changer - I’d forgotten how good it really is - makes trackstanding a LOT easier aswell

what bikes you got?
I have my steel drop bar road/cx/gravel thing, my brompton and my cargo bike, commute is 14 miles, on shitty back roads or the a38 main road, so I just take the drop bar bike, train on the brompton - 2 miles each way at home for the station 100m from work. if it was 7 miles id just ride my brompton, but i get sad not riding the other bike! cargo bike is 2 days a weekfor daddy day care days mid week, and weekends normally

Don’t worry, once you have kids you’ll gradually get rid of the bikes you no longer need.

I culled out 8 bikes prior to even knowing about the little human, must have been fate ,
Still have a kiddy back tandem frame hidden behind the sofa and the frame I built on the wall!

Just about to pick up a Brompton on the Cycle To Work scheme.
Torn between a totally minimal 1 speed with no mudguards and a fully loaded six speed with rack. The two kgs difference doesn't feel like it'd be very much difference to me. Any advice?

depends on your usage and terrain innit ..
I hardly ever lift and carry my brompton folded, only from lobby/reception to lift, even wheel it unfolded on platforms, fold only if the train is crowded. So the weight is hardly a concern for me.

minimal but usable is a 2 speed, going up to the 3 or 6 speed hub add a lot of weight. Racks suck, go for the FCB and a decent bag, the bike handles better, any luggage can stay on most of the time, you fold the back wheel under, any of the rack gets squished!
My other half has a m6l+ little human, loves it, - little human and she would have an m2 - with the Joeseph kuosac mid rise bars to make it a bit lower.
Just go test ride all the options work out what you like!

You can’t make a brompton much lighter without really spending some serious $.
Focus on the fun factor. Think about your use of it.
I originally had an S1E singlespeed two years ago when I was commuting about 5km each way to work - was a shitload of fun and I even raced it at the Nocturne.
I then bought a 2speed with guards as my commute increased and I thought it’d be nice that my gf could use it.
Within a month I’d stripped the gears off and the guards as the gears were shit and unpredictable in their functionality and the mudguards were so flimsy I was fearful of breaking them.
S1E with Kojaks is THE ONE for me.
I use it every day, and a lot a weekends, but then I won’t ride it more than 15km and I certainly won’t ride it in the rain.
It very much depends on your reliance and use of it as a transport necessity or a fun option to commute. I’m lucky that if it rains or I CBA I can jump on bus/tube/train and travel almost as efficiently, although nowhere near as enjoyably.
