  • Yeah they don't which really annoys me. Not quite sure what they were going for with the fork to be honest, it's massively wide but the crown is too low to clear anything above about 700c×35mm. Think it might be a 26" MTB fork that they repurposed or something, but then the studs are at 700c rim diameter... And I don't know why you'd spec canti studs on the front and not the rear (well I do, sort of, in that you can limp along with just a front brake if you're in Mongolia and both your disc brakes die, but it still seems weird).

  • Here's a crap photo of fork clearance with 650b×42mm. You can see width is not an issue but a bigger wheel diameter on 700c might cause problems. Tempted to try a 26"×2.25" in there for #mulletcross or #69er or whatever you want to call it.

  • 26"×2.1" fits easily. Can't ride it though because no front brake and wrong axle type. Reckon I could clear a 2.3-2.4" with no trouble which puts it in the same ballpark as 700c×28mm geometry-wise.

No chance on the back though so it'd be a mullet. Could be funny though.

  • Got some cheap On One Midges on eBay. Went for a spin up a nearby traily thingy (Corstophine Hill for those in the know) to try them out. I like it, at max width you've got a lot more leverage and it feels a bit mountain-bikey, enough that I could get around all these big rocks and roots and stuff as shown in the picture. I was at the limit of traction on these tyres though so I'll be interested to try them with my 650bs on and see how gnarly I can go before the bars become an obstacle.

Riding on the tops is the same obviously and on the hoods it's pretty similar but reaching for the brakes isn't as natural. Still adjusting the lever position a little bit, and slightly concerned about how it'll feel riding into the wind without any aero position to get into (wrists on tops is okay but feels sketchy). Think I'll pair up with aero bars for touring and I'd like some cross top levers too I think.

Annoying that these are glossy instead of matte...

Also got a picture of DT shifter

  • Also I know the brake cables are too long, but going to leave them until I get everything just right.

Also also I think I might merge this into my other thread, feels a bit profligate having two...

Also also also, I really like this gearing. I can cruise in the 46t all day on the road and just drop down to 30t on steep gravel stuff like the above or when loaded up with gear. 50-34/11-36 just had me cross-chained in both chainrings - on the 34 I'd be using the smallest 5 sprockets and in the 50 I'd be using the biggest 5. With the 46t it's bumped me up a couple of sprockets so I've got a nice distribution of time spent in each one, clustered around the middle of the cassette. In the top gear I'm hitting 50 kph/30 mph which probably a better match for my top speed on the flat.

  • Going to move all this into my other thread! Just did the 5 Ferries Challenge on it.
