• There is a IFTTT routine that sets today's NASA pic as your Android wallpaper everyday.

  • I maybtry one later - my guess is wget and dconf should do it easily enough.

  • I just nicked something off GitHub I think. Minor complication was that I'm using i3wm. But I haven't touched it for years to be honest

  • Noctilucent clouds! They've been visible the past few evenings apparently

They're pretty rare and quite mysterious. Were never observed before 1885 and no one is quite sure how they form; may be something to do with rocket launches or meteors.

Was in bed and got up to close my window, but when I spotted these I had to run off to get the camera and tripod :) quite surreal to see such bright clouds at 2 AM, it reminded me a little of the aurora.

  • Check the timestamp.

  • What a glorious run of clear nights we've had. Sadly I have not been able to take advantage of them much, and they are so short. But good to see the Milky Way over the neighbour's bay tree.

  • Exciting - and traced back to a blazar off the shoulder of Orion

  • Nearly 4 billion light years away. The power of the event would have been eye watering!

Probably attack ships on fire that caused it then...

  • International Space Station has been showing well this week. And Venus, Jupiter, Saturn and Mars are all visible in the evening sky.

  • Yep, I am out with my camera aiming to catch the ISS passing overhead at 23.13.

  • Venus getting very low now, but still could see Venus, Jupiter, Saturn and Mars at the same time this evening.

  • If you're into faint fuzzy blobs, there's one with a tail going past Capella this weekend. Comet 21P/Giacobini-Zinner is top right. Capella is red because of a filter I was using to cut out sodium streetlights.

  • Excellent work as ever Ludd!

    What was the exposure time?

  • Thanks! It was 66 seconds. It's caning it across the background stars so I didn't want to try much longer than that.

  • Great shot, Paul. May I ask what f-stop and ISO you used?

I used to do a bit of astronomy photography years ago, forgotten most of it now.

How long will it be around for?

  • Thanks Sam. F3.2 and ISO800. It's around for a couple more weeks at least, I think.

  • Thanks. Obviously easy to find tho at the weekend as so close to Capela.

  • Caught a couple of man-made objects hurtling overhead this evening. An Iridium satellite and then the ISS.

  • Great stuff as always. How come the top one's trail seems to brighten and fade but the lower trail is more consistent?
