Right thing to do is join a retirement team like Trek now.

Looked like he jerked the bike just before he gave up, thought his chain might have dropped again

I thought that but then watched the replay and it looked like he pulled a foot, mis-shifted or hit something - definite wobble and then he shut it down as too far back.
