I had the same problem at brother in the wild. Also leads to a destroyed cassette and a very expensive weekend out.
The solution for single speeding is to apparently reverse the order of some of cogs so the step up is too high.
At least my cassette still works.
Edit: Change cog order makes sense. But yes, no cassette tool. If I was to go remote places I would probably opt for 8 speed.
