• So, totally creeping this thread looking for options, me and a mate ended up doing a bit of a 24 hour special - he trashed his feet on a recent walking holiday in old boots so wasn't up for big mileage, but we did ~30 miles after getting the train to Colchester, lovely cycing around the Dedham Vale, really keen to go back and explore that. Should probably have checked the route a bit better before we set off but there you go...

Not many pubs in that part of the world so I recommend looking them up and plotting the route accordingly if you're inclined towards thirst. It's not look like Cotswolds/South Downs etc where there's a pub in every village/hamlet.

Cycled through Ipswich, which for some reason I hadn't expected to be so boaty. It was nice. We had a nice beer in the centre.

Easy ride out of the city then a gentle ~3 miles to the Nacton picnic area (just past Orwell School) which has access out to the 'beach'. Mild disappointment that it's not a 'swimmy' beach, but really lovely spot, you get the smell and (distant) sound of the sea and general salty proximity.

Chose a nice spot (on a sandy 'scoop' down from the footpath to the shore), about 300 yards if you came down from the car park and walked left along the footpath. Gathered some wood for the evening then headed up to the Ship at Livington. Really lovely pub, thoroughly recommend, food was great. The walk took about 15/20 mins along the front, the ride is about 7 mins on the roads. Came back, had fire, drank various strange spirits, went to sleep. Thoroughly pleasant experience. Got up early (some friendly hellos with dog walkers) and rode to Felixstowe for a bracing swim. Back on the 11am train and in the office for 12.30pm!
