I think it depends how much leverage you need on the brake levers. If you can get away with 2 fingers or so then it's better to have the levers inboard and leave your last fingers free to hold the very end of the bars. If your brakes are crap and you need all four fingers then that'll maybe necessitate having the brakes outboard of the shifter.

May be a stupid question, but should band-on thumb shifters be mounted to the inside or outside of brake levers?
