  • After close to 20 years in London we have been planning a move away for the last couple of years, our daughter has just finished school and we want to carry on our wanderlust. We had thought a B&B type affair in Cornwall the Lakes or a Ski resort in Spain, but right now I’m looking at places in Costa Rica!
I really don’t know what will happen, but I’m pretty apprehensive about leaving London.

  • What maynardeames said. Pretty sure CR to London will be similar journey time as Cornwall to London ;)

My vote would be CR. Nice people/culture, good weather, relatively low corruption. Although it's a lot more expensive than it used to be, which could be a pro or a con depending on your pov. Tonnes of ecotourism infrastructure tho.

Nicaragua could also be worth a look as it's cheaper and seems to be on the up. They used to have pretty good import tax breaks for foreigners - so things like cars, which can be expensive to buy in that part of the world.

  • Two of my colleagues are in the process of fleeing Nicaragua due to safety reasons.

  • Costa Rica is currently high on our list. I’ve been to see a few places one of which had 5 acres and stunning views from the mountains across to the Pacific, I have another much smaller one to see today which is in the cloud forest and is owned by descendants of the original quakers, I’m really quite excited.
As you say the cost of living can be really quite expensive. We did live in Latin America for a number of years and had discounted returning as we figured our daughter would make her life in Europe, but we have really gelled with the place on this visit, so who knows.
