  • If you're going for mid-fat 26" (and I think you should) Halo SAS rims are really nice and come in at 30mm internal.

  • Why does eBay insist on showing you another "similar item" 6 times before it lets you see the one you actually want? Grr

  • I certainly like the idea of mid-fat, but not sure of the practicality of it, living a good (hilly) 20 min road ride to the trails!

  • I’m on 2.4s on wide trials rims on my 1x1. Probably on the fat side side of normal or the skinny side of mid-fat but I like it. Tried 3” tyres n it was a bit heavy and draggy.

  • Interesting - I think the one I have coming is on some fairly slim old Maxxis Larsens so probably overdue replacement anyway. It's running discs so toying with going up to 27.5 but unsure yet.

  • Mine is rim brake only* so never thought about changing the wheel size.

*recently bought a newer fork with disc mount too.

  • I run a disc on my Steamroller and it's probably the best modification I made on that bike, makes it a true all weather commuter, and means you can run carbon rims without ruining one per winter by wearing through the brake track!

  • By the looks of things, from searching 1x1’s on the forum, I’m 99% sure I’ve bought the one that belonged to @cake!

  • This is not sh1tposting, I swear.

  • Ah cool!

BE curious to see what it looks like these days

  • There are rumblings around the forum that the straggler fork is naff. Any owners here care to add anything?

I was thinking about buying one for my cross-check but am being put off

  • The gears! They go so fast! And up the hills!

  • DBAD dude...

  • No really sure what could be wrong with the straggler fork. Isn’t it essentially the crosscheck fork with a disc brake mount?

  • No complaints here. It's heavy, but then, it's a Surly ¯_(ツ)_/¯

  • I recently got a secondhand 1x11 setup on my CrossCheck. It's a Shimano xt mech with clutch, cassette and chain with a Renthal narrow wide chainring on a Saint crank.

I find that it drops the chain every now and again whilst shifting, sometimes on non-rough terrain.

My first thought was that it wasn't shifting clean, so I re-cabled it, but that didn't seem to fix it. The chain isn't worn (0.75 on my measurer didn't fit in, not even with a bit of force) and I'm not sure what to check next!

  • Gears and front rack? Car thief. Biting my cycling steez.

    Welcome to the party.

  • Chain length?
    Clutch worn out?
Rear wheel slip, off center or in wrong position for hanger?

  • I've got one on my Genesis CdF, same feeling here it's heavy but feels reasuringly solid.

  • Chain length is a good shout. At a push I could remove a set of links. Might make a difference at the high end as the range is so huge it does look pretty slack on the smallest.

Clutch is fine, and I was worried about it being wheel slip so slammed it all the way back to guarantee centering it for a ride earlier and it had no effect.

I guess based on your last point that it could also be a bent derailleur or hanger. Not sure how to test for that specifically other than a hanger alignment tool.

  • I'm responsible for the rumblings, some of it anyway. There's nothing fundamentally wrong with it, but they suffer from the usual issues you'd find on bladed steel disc forks*. The blades are very beefy to resist the disc forces, yet they flex aft when you brake, which is not something you'd feel with rim brakes, or disc carbon forks. The extra material also means they're not as compliant as a similar design made for rim brakes.
I rode 1000s of kms with my Straggler (from London commutes to WE rides, I even did a Paris-Roubaix with it) and the front end feel was my only real complain about it.
*Victoire reported issues with theirs, Elephant moved to a unicrown design for the NFE, and Thorn make one one but are pretty vocal about the compromises.

  • Just gonna leave this here.

FWIW I (briefly) had a pair of Bontrager Satellite carbon disc forks which flexed noticeably under braking. No such issues with the Surly fork. I've gone back to crabon again as they suit the frame better and the Surlys are boat anchors. Will probably regret it though.

  • I think 650b disc fixed audax check is an itch I have to scratch though, even if just to find out it's sluggish and crap.

@beetletype25 a friend told me about that, I'll PM you
