this isn't gong to be single speed as i don't have a single speed hub and gears are useful.
i found a 7 speed flat bar grip shift that works at the bottom of a parts box and a 7 speed shimano cassette - i've got some pretty knackered fulcrum 5s with a shimano 9/10 speed free hub on - with 3 1mm washers behind the cassette it fits on the freehub with no play...a spare 105 rear mech will get used too - i can't see a problem with this - as long as the shifter is indexed to match the cassette the derailleur will do what it's told by the shifter and shift fine right?? -
• #7
the derailleur will do what it's told

Lol what Tijs means is that it would work properly but it’s designed to use 10s chains and they are narrow. Using narrow 10s chain wont work with the cassette. Using 7 speed chain will cause issues with the derailleur.

good point - hadn't thought about the mech being funny about a 6-7-8 speed chain
i've prob got the reach mech that came off the same bike the cassette did
-
• #10
Rear mech would probably work fine with 7 speed jockey wheels.
-
• #11
oh - interesting - i've found the old shimano alvio rear mech and its cleaned up pretty well - if i cant get it to work i might try and swap out the jockey wheels with the 105 - thanks

Prolly won't clear it at the points where it meets the chain guard or whatever is the name for the metal plate holding the jockey wheels to the rest. Would need new screws etc.
I would recommend to go to local bike shop and buy used 6/7/8 speed derailleur for coffee money. They will have cheap chains too. -
• #13
I used a 6-7-8 speed chain on my 105 5700 rear derailleur, no problems at all. If you want to use the alivio jockey wheels for peace of mind I bet you could, but it’ll work just fine without modifying.

pretty much done - just need a saddle (don't have a spare one for this build) - some mudguards which I'll have to buy and a front rack which is on its way - only things bought for this build were one new inner brake cable and the tyres - everything else was lying around unused having come off other bikes.

Perfect cheers
bought this frame off here a few years back for 60 odd £...built it up and rode it / scavenged from it here and there until it's been sitting in the shed for the last 2 years or so with just the brakes and cut cables hanging off it. they are nice frames and even though i don't need a cross bike it can still be useful. what i do need is a run around bike so here we go...
i don't want to worry about locking it up and bits being stolen off it so will be using spare parts lying around and spending minimal funds - sometimes at the expense i suspect of aesthetics but not functionality.
