• It's great to hear she's in high spirits, terrible though her injuries are--she'll probably need every bit of positive attitude she can get. I'm sure there will be a comedown at some point, so be prepared for that.

On a cheerier note, I've known a couple of people with damaged optical nerves (one even had his partially severed deliberately in a completely misguided operation--don't ask, I still don't understand why they thought it was a good idea) and they report that their conditions are often very variable--the damage never quite goes away but they have episodes of sight and episodes of whole or partial blindness, and, as one of them always stressed, completely contrary to the doctors' prognoses. It may not be permanent, but obviously I don't have any understanding of her condition and the prognosis may well be accurate in her case for all I know.

Her temporary or permanent loss of stereometric vision may obviously have an effect on her cycling.

Continued heartfelt good wishes for her recovery.

I've only got one good eye and it's never really affected me, obviously this is a different situation, but meant as a positive thing. Poor vision in one eye isn't much of a disadvantage for the vast majority of day to day stuff.
