  • but assumed it would just ride up from my hips onto my belly and then flail around loosely

I'll let you know after tonight!

    #nevertrynewkitonraceday #breakalltherules

  • I've been using a flipbelt for ages, really like it

  • Been running in Nike Epic Reacts and have to say they're super comfy

  • Once i locked the tightening bit in place with a safety pin this worked well enough, didn't notice it much. Not waterproof (or sweatproof) so had to wrap phone in a sandwich bag too.

  • 17.24 tonight. Honesty pens at start sub 16, sub 18 etc meant loads of space compared to last year. Tagged into 2nd row of sub 18 hoping to get dragged along.

1st km 3.21 on watch, (16.45 pace = way too fast). 2 to 3km still at sub 17 pace but stitch and fatigue meant I dropped to 3.33 then 3.38 for last 2km. 53rd of 480ish. 10th V40.

First 1km was fun but at 185bpm for holding sub 17 pace I knew it wouldnt last. Stitch was maybe from either peanut butter rice crackers snack after work, out of date Nuun electrolyte tab as my drink (May 2018) or new waist belt a bit too tight? More likely just went out too hard.

Faster than race 1 last year so onwards & upwards hopefully.

  • Well done, that's really impressive. I still can't run a km under four mins.

  • Great run, well done!
Also, I didn't know there was a Sale Water Parkrun, I thought the locals were in Alexandra and Longford Parks but it seems I've conjured up one of them in my imagination. I'll come along to it before the summer is out.

I decided it's time to start getting myself ready for the Trafford 10k which was put back to September (only run ~60k this year so far) so last night did a hard (for me) 7km and managed it in under 35 minutes. Really chuffed with it, as <50mins is my aim for the race.
If anyone has any advice on intervals for this I'd be interested, otherwise my aim is to keep the running load up where it is, slowly increasing until I'm running over 10k a week.

  • Kilian Jornet doing the Bob Graham today, apparently.

  • I saw he was in the Lakes in the week, I did wonder if it would happen. Very interested to see what he can do, it must be bone dry up there at the moment.

  • 14 hours - or would he only do it if he thought he could break the record?

  • Ta.

Locally we have Longford, Platt, Sale, Wythenshawe & Burnage. Spoilt for choice!

7km in 35, stick with that routine & up the distance a bit as you plan to you'll be fine, regular steady base miles will get you faster anyway. Intervals can probably wait IMO, others might disagree.

  • Record or recce? The big KJ question!

  • Sounds pretty serious. Up on record pace at the moment.

  • Absolutely destroyed the Bob Graham Round record. wow. How long is that going to stand for?

  • Forever? This is the universally accepted greatest mountain runner of all time. A week after winning the Mont Blanc Marathon where he put like 4 minutes into Lauenstein and Angermund too.

  • Billy Bland must sit in the pub tonight thinking “shit, I really was proper good”

Billy still holds the record for humans in my book

  • kilian jornet (@kilianj) Tweeted:
Thanks Billy, I had better conditions than you, the best pacers and your inspiration to give everything! And even like that it was sooo sooo hard!!!
Thanks to Carl, Chris, Martin, Josh,… https://t.co/hku7lNbjU4 https://twitter.com/kilianj/status/1016034182294855682?s=17

  • Is there a pacers list anywhere incidentally? I know Carl Bell was with him on Leg 1. Got to be a pretty elite line-up.

  • Not a bad selection that.

  • There's only one way to get the running mojo back... new shoes! Brooks Ghost, feel great so far (5 miles easy). Similar feel to Adidas Glide Boost - nicely cushioned but not spongy - if anything, marginally more comfortable on my feet. (I bought these at Marathon Expo but Runners Need have them for £69 at the moment if anyone's interested.)

  • Brooks Ghost

Interesting, ta. I got on well with the Glide Boost a couple of years ago for London Marathon. I got the Boost Tempo Aktiv in the same size and promptly found them too small and can't run in them. Toe box was definitely smaller and was causing blisters and bruised toes.
Got Solar Boost and really liking them (although also had to size up 1/2 from the old Glide Boost). And relieved to find ones that I've got a few weeks to wear in before Hamburg IM at the end of the month.

  • On the subject of new kit:
Saucony Breakthru 3 - I like these a lot. Like Saucony Kinvara but with a little more cushioning and 4mm more drop. Probably my new regular shoes, replacing Asics Gel Pulse. Worked out around £50 posted direct from Saucony with discount code. Would happily run a 10k - 13.1 in these, possibly even a 26.2.

Flipbelt - So, so good. Solid construction, works perfectly. No more shoulder strap rubbing on run-commutes! I'm a 30-32" waist and ordered a Small.

  • Ghost definitely worth considering. The tongue/heel area is more plush and really comfy to slip into, and the upper is more stretchy and forgiving than the Glide. I've always liked the fit of Brooks shoes (been through Adrenaline, Defyance and Glycerin) and these might be the best yet. Since Adidas replaced Glide with the super-cushiony Supernova I've been on the look-out for a new long term everyday trainer and I'm hoping these will do the trick.

  • Nice wheels.

I'm up in the Lake District this weekend helping with the Lakes Sky Ultra and Scafell Sky Race. If anyone's around say hello. Could do with the weather staying dry and maybe a bit cooler.
