Nice frame. Chunky looking quill stem, 3t mega chromix.

Lary paint! Please stick it on the Yates thread when it’s built up.

She’s here. Great condition. Clearance is as tight as I thought. Think a 25mm might be a squeeze but will try later.
Quill stem stuck which the seller did allude to. Pretty sure I can free that off. Will plug the bolt hole and jizz a load of penetrating oil down the fork this evening.

Is this bit the entire expander assembly or will there be some sort of wedge in there?

That'll be the whole thing.
Cool frame!

Frame looks amazing. Could have some fun with bar tape/cables... yellow to complete the primary vibes, and then black to contrast the white

This would be smashing!

White cables and tape I think.
If only I could shift this fucking stem.

Invert bike, plug stem bolt hole, fill steerer tube with penetrating oil, wait.
Some good vids on this so I’ll try heating with a hot air gun and cooling with pipe freeze on Wednesday if this doesn’t free it off.

Amazing frame, will make a great project.
Have you tried putting some wide handlebars in there and a beater front wheel to get some leverage (clamp wheel between legs, gently rotate bars)? Also IME some headsets exert a little clamping pressure when tightened, if you haven't already it might be worth slackening it off.

Cheers - headset is loosened off.
I’m worried about bending the fork tips. I’ll clamp a piece of wood in a bench vice at my dad’s tomorrow and use it the apply the force up near the fork crown.

Frame looks amazing, well done

Came out quite easily. Was quite rusty before my dad decided he needed to polish it up on his bench grinder 🙄.
It will be replaced by a lovely pewter 3ttt stem and matching bars bought off here.

Any progress? I'm rebuilding a similar frame and looking for some inspiration...

Funny you should ask. Literally finished today. Few minor tweaks to come. It will need a shorter stem at some point and I've got a white saddle and polished seatpost on the way.
Angle of the pic makes the bars and levers look ridiculous.

The Joe Waugh Brexit™. I will mutter 'Up Yours Delors' as I pedal along.

Really nice! have you taken into consideration some gum walls and/or a gray anodized seat post to match the stem? Either way bike looks good...
Ah, just saw that you are indeed considering a different seat post
-

Yes. I’ll source some gumwalls at some point but a 23mm is tight on the rear and I can’t afford to experiment with buying loads of tyres at the moment.

Couple of pics to show the finished article and some of the pantograph detail on the stays/fork crown.
Seatpost is a cheap job from SJS Cycles and the saddle is from Ali Express and very much the only concession to weight on this thing.
By slamming it forward on the rails, I think I might be able to live with the 130mm stem. Seemed okay on a short ride yesterday.

Thought I'd missed out on this and then it appeared back on eBay so I snapped it up. Love the Joe Waugh headtube badge.
Tubing is 653. Will be built up with second hand 5800 (which might take a while to source), white tape and a white Arione. I'll put my race wheels on for some Insta posts and then some Fulcrum Racing 5. I gather lots of Dave Yates frames were notorious for very tight clearances so likely to be looking at 23c tyres max.
Any recommendations for a chunky looking quill stem?
