Went to the MG garage today to get my overdrive fixed. A short section of wire needed replacing, apparently. Should take about an hour or so.
I was there all day. I spent £300. My overdrive is not fixed.
Not a happy bunny.

Also, hanging around outside all day was not planned for. No sun cream. Sleeveless bogan shirt. Sun fucking burn.
Grrr.

Do you now have overdrive?
-
• #43155
Had this once before in uno turbo, had a back box of fairly normal size but failed by 4db (so just over double the limit I think that means)
Previous times they never tested me so I never failed

Do you now have overdrive?
Not in the slightest.

Know the feeling. Not sure I ever have.

BMW people, my E61 isn't doing anything electrically this morning... Won't unlock, lights don't work, radio doesn't turn on, won't turn over (obviously). I've got in via manual key and tested the battery (showing 4.6v) - this is clearly someway off 12v but I'm surprised brake lights at least don't work.
Anyway, new battery time or jumpstart/charge and see what happens? Either way I'm late for work and spending on parts & tools... -

Didn't someone say upthread that BMW's are quite picky with battery power? Something about seat heating turning off, windows opening at half speed, etc to preserve a low battery? So perhaps it's deciding to nothing rather than trickling through 4.6V?

Jump it and see if it happens again tomorrow. If so, run a voltage test to see if anything is drawing extra current and to make sure the alternator is charging the battery. If neither of those, then probably new battery time. How old is the battery?
-
• #43162
Yeah I’ve read that, non-essential stuff will turn off but 4.6 seems enough to run a few LEDs.

Cheers that’s a good plan, not sure on battery age - I’ve had the car a year now. Just waiting for stuff to open so I can get a jump starter/enlist a local garage.
3L so halfrauds only model won’t work, are the USB power bank style ones any good? -
• #43164
If you jump it, go for a longish drive to make sure that battery gets charged fully, bit pointless otherwise, no?

I've got a decent battery on the shelf - brand new, bought it for the Porsche, but the bodyshop replaced the duff one before I could do so.
You're welcome to it, although you'd likely have to drive over to get it - light it is not.
-

Yeah those off the shelf ones that you can buy in the shop are not good, they get very hot.
Your best bet is some Porsche specific ones, 102dB is pretty punchy.
It'll be even louder with ITBs, mine with open trumpets, 4-1 manifold, straight pipe with just one silencer was 112dB, with 120dB bangs on overrun....
Did you have to pay to re-book or were they nice about it?
Also, they should test your car any day there's a trackday or event on, you don't have to make an appointment.

• #43167
one silencer was 112dB
Sweet Jesus, is that as a daily user too?
-
• #43168
30 mins long enough? That's my drive to work... Obviously will take the jumper with me.
-
• #43169
Thanks, appreciate the offer, probably not driving up to London for a while (or anywhere at this rate!) though unforch.
-
• #43170
No idea tbh, but considering using a charger is an overnight affair I'd aim for at least an hour, but I'm basing that on gut feel
-
• #43171
Well I don't daily drive, but when it was like that, it was my only car. Had to use ear defenders with ear plugs underneath on long journeys but it was worth it when the roof was down and you were on it
-
• #43172
CanBUS, so once voltage drops below the required range, nothing will work as the brake light is unlikely to be a circuit that gets power all the time the ignition is on (even when low batt), hazards probably will though

Once rode in a mates stage prepared evo (8 I think, first of the newer shape), ear defenders that wouldn't look out of place in a saw mill were NOT enough. Anything over 60 mph the transmission alone was loud enough but exhaust was ridiculous, more just from the relentless drone. Put me right off doing a 'stage' or 'full track car' for the road project, just unbearable.

Ha. yes it was fun.
Scared the shit out of people though.
The chap said that baffles were available, but I'd need two, and that they were expensive. I also recalled NH using one and melting his bumper, which put me off.
I'm re-booked onto the 102Db day on Thursday now.
